Engineer Intern (35 Hour)

 

The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is dedicated to conserving, improving and protecting our natural resources and the environment - and increasing the availability of cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable energy. DEEP is responsible for protecting and enhancing the quality of Connecticut’s air, water, and lands. The Bureaus of Air Management, Materials Management and Compliance Assurance, and Water Protection and Land Reuse, focus on this mission through environmental monitoring, permitting, enforcement, cleanup of contaminated sites, and pollution prevention strategies.

DEEP has a current job opportunity for an Engineer Intern within the Bureau of Air Management, Planning and Standards Division, Attainment Planning Unit.  Engineer Interns receive training under direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of one year before being promoted to the target class of Air Pollution Control Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period.  

This position provides a unique opportunity to join the team committed to developing state-specific policies or analyzing the effects of national policies established to comply with Clean Air Act requirements.  As a trainee, the successful candidate will learn to analyze and correlate air pollution data trends and projections with implementation of various policy scenarios.  Interns will become familiar with applicable federal and state air pollution control regulations and the models and tools for quantifying and analyzing emissions and transport of air pollutants and their precursors.  

The position will work out of our downtown Hartford Office, located at 79 Elm Street, across from historic Bushnell Park.

This position is full-time, 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

Salary Note: Upon initial entry to this class, incumbents will be placed in Salary Group ES 18, step 5, $53,743/yr.

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.

Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.

Specific duties will include:

Assisting with engineering assessments including performing emission rate verifications, cost effectiveness studies and evaluation of emissions reduction strategies;

Assisting in reviewing analyses of emission inventories for incorporation into regional photochemical grid modeling;

Assisting in modeling stationary and/or mobile source emissions for air quality and transportation planning purposes, including developing skills and abilities necessary to run regional photochemical grid models using national inputs and/or Connecticut-specific inputs;

Assisting in reviewing proposed federal regulations and performing calculations to quantify their effects on air pollution levels in Connecticut; 

Assisting in preparing detailed technical and engineering reports;

Analyzing monitored air quality data and meteorology to determine interactions and trends;

Conferring with stakeholders and performing basic technical research in matters related to air quality programs; and

Attending training to enhance knowledge of sources of air pollution and air pollution control.

General knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods; skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments; considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details; ability to utilize computer software.

A Bachelor's degree in the discipline required by the target class.

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, meteorology, mathematics, or the physical sciences. 

Preference will be given to candidates with experience/training in programming; use of mathematical modeling; understanding of atmospheric chemistry and meteorology; experience/training with technical writing and coursework in air pollution and air pollution control.
