Fire Academy Trainer

Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection is recruiting for a Fire Academy Trainer position located at the Connecticut Fire Academy in Windsor Locks, CT.   This is a full time, 40 hour per week position, Monday-Friday schedule.

The Connecticut Fire Academy delivers on average of 375 training programs each year reaching 6,000 fire service members of local career, volunteer and state agency fire departments. Fire Academy Trainers are responsible to lead several major programmatic areas (i.e. Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, Recruit, EMS, NIMS, Fire Officer, etc.). 

Selected candidates will be responsible to plan, schedule, coordinate and supervise program delivery by our pool of 160+ adjunct Fire Service Instructors teaching in their assigned program areas.  Fire Academy Trainers ensure all program logistics to include equipment, workbooks and student reference materials and consumables utilized in program delivery are properly accounted for, maintained and delivered to the class locations.  All Fire Academy Trainers will have responsibility to manage a new Learning Management system (LMS) currently being implemented.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Commission on Fire Prevention and Control, Connecticut Fire Academy, this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in preparing and conducting fire suppression and related emergency services training programs.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plans, develops, coordinates and evaluates comprehensive training programs for Connecticut Fire Academy; conducts needs assessments; develops course objectives, curricula, outlines and contents; selects and develops training methods and materials; researches learning materials and resources ensuring training, operability of equipment and general maintenance as needed; monitors and evaluates training courses and participant progress; provides technical assistance and consultation; maintains records and prepares reports; organizes and maintains a library of training materials; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of principles and techniques of training and staff development; knowledge of National Fire Protection Association regulation and standards; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills. Ability to assess training needs and determine objectives; ability to develop, organize and conduct training courses

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of technical experience in fire suppression and emergency services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of the General Experience must have been providing fire suppression and emergency services training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. National certification by the National Board of Fire Service Professional Qualifications (NPQS) or the International Fire Services Accreditation Congress (IFACC) or State Certification by the Connecticut Fire Academy that meet the provisions of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Firefighter 2.
2. Incumbents in this class must be qualified at the level of Fire Service Instructor III.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain specific education and/or experience to meet various certifications.
4. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license with a valid Q or CDL endorsement.
5. Incumbents in this class will be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some lifting of equipment and danger of injury during training programs and some disagreeable conditions including exposure to weather, loud noises and work out of doors.
