The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites its qualified DOT employees to apply for the position of Transportation Maintainer 4 - Highly Skilled Sign Fabricator located at the Rocky Hill Sign Shop Facility. This position is 37.5 hours per week, with a work schedule of Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The duties of the position include, but are not limited to, performing highly skilled sign fabrication tasks such as:
• Input new sign prints
• Plot vinyl/reflective sheeting
• Read Prints/Layout on substrate
• Plot Ulano film for screens
• Make silk screens
• Dispatch work orders for subordinates
• Cut sheet aluminum
• Cover substrates with reflective, non-reflective sheeting
• Operate 12’ and 6’ sheer
• Screen substrates
• Trim sheeting from substrates
• Lead person on floor
• Organize orders
• Put together completed orders for pick up
• Operate fork truck (have a valid fork truck cert)
• Be available for snow work (winter)
Eligible candidates will be required to participate in a skill evaluation practicum. Applicants must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Class A or B), with the "tank endorsement" and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC), and meet the "Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities" listed below in order to be eligible to apply.
Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 30-mile residency from the job location.
In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current employee of the Department of Transportation, with permanent state status, and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening. You must specify your highly skilled sign fabricator experience on your application.
*For employees in the classified service, permanent status is obtained after successful completion of a working test period. For employees in the unclassified service, permanent status is obtained after serving in a position for at least six months (full-time or full-time equivalent).
Incumbents in this class must be able to lift, carry and stand for any length of time throughout a normal workday. Incumbents may be required to wear full face respirators as needed.
Interviews will be limited to candidates whose experience and training most closely meet the necessary criteria of the position. DUTIES:

- In addition to other duties, may assist a Transportation Maintenance Manager in preparing and checking reports.
Candidates must have experience, knowledge, skills and abilities in the highly skilled tasks in the design, layout, and fabrication of signs on state highways, as well as requests that come in from other state agencies, prior to being eligible for interview and to participate in the skill evaluation practicum.
Considerable knowledge of operating the Graftec Plotter and Gerber Omega 5 Computer Sign Program; knowledge of entering, designing, and outputting new sign catalog prints; layout of substrates; ability to utilize computer software; must be able to operate and maintain computer plotter and other sign manufacturing equipment; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; dispatch work orders to subordinates and assist in manufacturing of signs; be available for winter work / snow removal.
Ability and knowledge to operate sign fabrication equipment and tools, including band and radial arm saw, drill press, forklift, press machine and other tools as necessary. Experience in sign fabrication; design and input of new prints as well as plotting existing sign prints, fabrication, and layout; delegating work orders to subordinates and assisting in fabrication.
