Maintainer (37.5 Hour Entry Level)

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - South Region's Public Division - has two (2) full-time seasonal Maintainer positions located at Camp Harkness, Waterford, CT.

Camp Harkness is located in Southeastern Connecticut on the shores of Long Island Sound. The 102-acre property in Waterford CT is comprised of open and wooded land and includes tidal marsh and beachfront. Facilities at Camp Harkness include year-round and seasonal cabins, year-round cottages, seasonal tent sites, barnyard animals, picnic pavilions & grills, accessible playscape, scenic walkway and overlook, bathhouse, beach with seasonal boardwalk, gardens, dining hall, lodge, and infirmary. Camp Harkness is owned by the State of Connecticut and managed by the Department of Developmental Services.

These are full-time 37.5 hour per week positions on 1st shift. Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. OR Sunday - Thursday 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Pay rate is $16.02 per hour.

The incumbent will perform grounds keeping duties including cleaning and restocking lavatories, lawn care, trash collection and removal, light repairs, set-up and removal of materials for Camp activities and will assist Facilitiy Maintenance with basic plumbing, electric and carpentry.

These are seasonal positions and will end no later than November 7, 2019. Incumbents will not be entitled to any State employee benefits.

• Applicants must be able to work for the full season and must complete all required DDS training.
• Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and campers.
•Incumbent must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle license.

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:

- building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial)
- grounds care
- food services
- operation of trucks of less than five ton capacity
- parking garage

Some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to learn policies and procedures; ability to operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work; some ability in simple record keeping.

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

• Preference shall be give to person that have previous maintenance and grounds keeping experience.
• Preference shall be give to persons who have previous basic plumbing, electric and carpentry experience.
• Preference shall be given to persons who have experience working with or volunteering with people with disabilities.
• Preference shall be given to persons who have previous experience working in a camp, park, or other recreational setting.

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
2. A physical examination may be required.

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
