Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation (DOT) Division of Budget Services seeks a qualified individual for the position of Accounting Career Trainee (ACT) in the Revenue Accounting Unit in Newington. This position is for the first shift, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday. The DOT Revenue Accounting Unit may use this list to fill other ACT vacancies in the unit for up to a year.

The position is designated for a candidate to perform a wide variety of functions including but not limited to, maintaining the Funds Awaiting Distribution Account, recording deposits, making appropriate transfers in or out of the account, and making payments to suppliers when necessary. It also includes a monthly reconciliation and a quarterly report issued to any unit with funds in the account. The position will also be responsible for reconciling and maintaining the demand deposit funds on a biweekly or quarterly basis. This requires the ability to independently review, interpret, and summarize source documentation to determine required action. This position requires significant interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written, and the ability to deal with difficult people. This position will also be responsible for reconciling the daily mailroom sheet to the deposits to ensure all checks received in the Department’s mailroom are deposited in a timely manner; and perform related duties as required.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional accounting or auditing position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Receives training in introductory accounting or auditing work for development of skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement into a professional agency accounting or auditing position; performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during the course of the training period; examines financial records of governmental or private businesses and accounting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with statutes, regulations, guidelines or accepted accounting principles; may receive training in such areas as maintaining financial records and accounts, establishing financial statements and schedules, and preparing budget estimates; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of accounting and auditing principles and practices; knowledge of business mathematics and statistics; some knowledge of business uses of information technology; some knowledge of effective report writing; ability to read and understand written materials; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree in accounting or in a closely related business field with at least 15 semester hours in accounting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates are preferred to have the following:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to independently and accurately apply guidelines and regulations
• Experience working in high volume, customer service oriented professional office environment
