DEEP's Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, State Parks Division, Lifeguard Program, has multiple opportunities for Lifeguard Supervisors throughout the State Park system. Lifeguard Supervisors assist in managing the operation of the guarded designated swim area at the State Park. This includes conducting basic lifeguarding duties, handling the day to day function of a lifeguard squad, coordinating lifeguarding shifts, leading trainings, properly caring for and maintaining equipment, and communicating issues to the Park Management.

Work Location: Outside at designated swimming areas at various State Parks.

Hours of work: are 10 am to 6 pm, typically five days per week for a total of 40 hours. Weekends and holidays are mandatory.  

Pay rate is: $14.00 - 16.00 per hr depending on relevant experience. No benefits. 

Length of positions:  Memorial Day through Labor Day, 2019.

Selection Plan

These positions are non-competitive. Open to the public.

The selected candidates must be fluent in English and be at least 18 years old. 

The selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.

Candidates should have a current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding with the Waterfront Module. Applicants without the Waterfront Module may still be accepted contingent on passing the pre-requisites for that course.

Experience as a lifeguard or experience in a supervisory role over others is required for this position.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor and assisting in the management of lifeguard operations as well as performing a full range of lifeguard services at swimming areas operated by the state agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Acts as the working supervisor and assists in managing the operation of the guarded designated swim area at the State Park; performs basic lifeguarding duties; leads the day to day activities of a lifeguard squad; coordinates lifeguard shifts; leads training activities; participates in the proper caring for and maintenance of equipment; provides daily updates to the supervisor and park management on issues and activities; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  1. Applicants must demonstrate competence in basic life-saving techniques.
  2. Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to swim while carrying an adult to safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of paid lifeguard experience or previous lifeguard supervisory experience. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred applicants will be able to work full-time for the entire summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), work well as part of a team, and already possess American Red Cross Lifeguard certification with the Waterfront Module.

Applicants must demonstrate competence in basic life-saving techniques. Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to swim while carrying an adult to safety.

All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:

Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. The head must remain above the surface of the water.

Complete the ‘brick’ timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.) Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. (Candidates should not swim the distance under water.) Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Complete the ‘underwater swim’ event by swimming an accumulation of 15 yards underwater, in a single breath, picking up three dive rings.

Demonstrate proficiency in skill: Rescuing a Passive Victim with a Rescue Board at a waterfront setting. Candidate will have 2 attempts.

Must be able to demonstrate proper CPR for a victim on dry land vs. a victim pulled from the water (for those candidate who already possess a current lifeguard certification only).

Attend all class sessions of the lifeguarding course (if not already certified).

Position requirements for specifically Hammonasset, Silver Sands and Sherwood Island:

Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. This is to be completed in 12 minutes or less.

Candidates must be able to reach the outer edge of the swim zone (buoy) using a rescue board within 1 minute 30 seconds.

Must complete a 50 yard swim in 45 seconds or less.

Must complete a 1.5 mile run in 15 minutes or less.

Position requirements for specifically Burr Pond and Indian Well:

Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. This is to be completed in 15 minutes or less.

Candidates must be able to run from to the tower/ chair, into the water, and then swim to the far corner of the back swim line in 30 seconds or less. 

Complete a 0.25 mile run in 2 minutes and 30 seconds or less.

Must be able to retrieve a passive victim from the bottom of the shallow end and surface with the victim face up. Candidate will have 2 attempts.

Must be able to jump off and then climb back into a rescue kayak without flipping the kayak. Candidate will have 2 attempts.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
