Transportation Engineer Technician (40 Hour)

Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) seeks qualified applicants for a Transportation Engineer Technician. This is a 40-hour per week position in the Surveys Unit of the District 3 Office of Construction located in New Haven.

The incumbent is responsible for independently performing a full range of survey duties in support of transportation construction engineering projects which include operating survey equipment; monitoring the setting and driving of stakes; setting benchmarks; collecting field data; creating charts, maps, and plot profiles; calculating areas and volumes; laying out project limits; and preparing reports.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation, this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of basic technical engineering work in support of transportation construction engineering projects.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

As an instrument person sets up and operates survey equipment; serves as the head rod person or chain person, monitoring the setting and driving of stakes, clearing survey lines, and setting benchmarks; maintains survey instruments, equipment and electronic measuring devices; performs construction layout; takes and reviews field notes; collects and collates field data; creates charts, profiles, cross sections, maps and other drawings; plots profiles, survey notes, topography, lines and grades; calculates areas and volumes using standard formulas, planimeters, calculating machines and computer applications; lays out project limits by line and grade; consults with state officials and contractors regarding projects; inspects site safety conditions; inspects projects at all phases for conformance to plans, specifications and schedules; inspects old roads, marks out defective areas and calculates material quantities needed for repair; verifies labor, equipment and materials submitted for payment; obtains samples and performs field or laboratory tests such as density, gradations, compactions or other tests; controls and places materials, concrete, asphaltic and other mixes; prepares reports, cost estimates and writes and coordinates equipment transfers and requisitions; utilizes computers to update engineering data; compiles maps based on analysis and interpretation of aerial photographs; provides Chief of Survey Party assistance and reviews calculations; acts as Chief of Survey Party in his/her absence; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of surveying and survey equipment; basic knowledge of construction engineering principles and practices; basic knowledge of construction methods and materials; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to perform mathematical calculations involving the use of trigonometric functions and logarithm tables; ability to create, read and interpret scales, diagrams, plans, specifications and drawings; ability to use and maintain surveying and drafting equipment and instruments; ability to prepare accurate drawings; ability to keep records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

An Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology or Construction Technology and one (1) year of related experience involved in monitoring highway construction projects or a variety of routine surveying activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. Possession of at least Level II certification in the Civil Engineering Technology-Transportation Program, Highway Construction Inspection or Highway Surveys from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) may be substituted for the Associate’s degree requirement.
2. For state employees, successful completion of a Transportation Engineer Technician Trainee program may be substituted for the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

More than one year of related experience in the performance of survey work in support of construction engineering projects.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from highway or construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
