Introduction

The Department of Transportation seeks qualified individuals for the position of Transportation Public Concessions Inspector within the Office of Property and Facilities Services. The work schedule will normally be comprised of four weekdays plus one weekend day, 40 hours per week. Normal work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. which includes holidays – there may be occasional early or late shifts as deemed necessary. This position is responsible for the inspection of 23 Service plazas plus the CTDOT cafeteria in order to insure compliance with the contract and state federal and local laws. These sites include approximately 64 food venues and 23 convenience stores that all need to be checked for contractual compliance through utilization of electronic software inspection document in which the sites are reviewed based on 86 different categories.

Please note Newington is the location of the Concessions Unit, however, due to this office's oversight of statewide operation of all 23 Concessions service plazas and cafeteria, extensive travel will occur.

Selection Plan

Hired candidate will be required to attend (at the Department's expense) the Environmental Health Training Program at Southern Connecticut State University.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation, Concessions Unit this class is accountable for inspecting leased public concessions facilities to ensure compliance with contractual provisions as well as state and federal laws and regulations.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Inspects public concession operations including restaurants, minimarts, vending facilities and gasoline service stations for conformance to contractual provisions pertaining to quality of service, pricing, hours of operation and staffing as well as compliance with state and federal regulations and standards for food preparation and storage, health codes and sanitation; reviews service requirements, deficiencies and improvements with concession managers; keeps records and prepares written reports; investigates complaints; coordinates inspection activities with other local, state and federal inspectors; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of the principles and practices of food service and vending facility operations; knowledge of food sanitation and personal hygiene practices as related to food production; knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply relevant state and federal laws and regulations; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills;ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in the management of a food service facility. Management is defined as being the owner, manager or assistant manager of a restaurant, food service operation, minimart or other area where food is served.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. College training in hotel and restaurant management, food service management, business administration or a closely related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years.
2. Two (2) years of experience in the inspection of food service operations may be substituted for the General Experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a current ServSafe certification is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class are required to work a rotating shift which includes nights, holidays and weekends.
2. Incumbents in this class will be required to travel.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
