Introduction

The Teachers Retirement Board (TRB) is responsible for management of the Teachers Retirement System and provides retirement, disability, survivorship and health insurance benefits for Connecticut public school teachers and their beneficiaries.  The TRB provides almost $2 billion to nearly 100,000 members, annually.

We are recruiting for a full-time Financial Clerk.  In this role, you will process and scan incoming mail; distribute faxes; record source documents in the pension administration system; provide customer service via email, phone or in person; audit accounts out of balance; process member payments and perform other related duties as assigned.   The Teachers Retirement Board is located at 765 Asylum Avenue in Hartford, CT.  This is a Monday through Friday, 40 hr/week position.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for the preparation and/or maintenance of payroll, agency accounts, financial statements, cash accounting or other bookkeeping and record keeping functions in an agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists in preparation of payroll or independently prepares components of a payroll such as shift differential, holidays and overtime; maintains agency bookkeeping and other financial records; maintains cash journals and ledgers; process payments; assists in preparing financial statements and budgets; balances and reconciles accounts; reviews incoming bids for compliance with purchase orders; may prepare reports; may handle money or checks; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of basic bookkeeping, accounting, and financial record keeping procedures; some knowledge of payroll procedures, financial terminology and coding, statements and budget preparations; skill in performing arithmetical computations; interpersonal skills; ability to perform general clerical tasks; ability to handle large amounts of money; ability to operate a variety of office equipment which includes personal computers, computer terminals, typewriters, calculating machines, cash registers, check writing machines and other electronic equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years' clerical experience in accounting, financial record keeping or bookkeeping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate will have:  

  • Accounts Payable within the CORE-CT Financial Module or similar electronic financial system
  • Have 10 key calculator/adding machine and PC skills in order to facilitate high volume document processing, filings,  indexing systems, and forms
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and proofreading skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Completes task/assignments/projects on schedule to ensure excellent customer service to internal and external customers
  • Microsoft Excel and Word

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Persons having responsibility for supervising or observing the behavior of inmates or custodial clients will be required to possess a high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certification by the time of permanent appointment.
