State Police Identification Technician 1 (35 Hour)

Introduction

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is recruiting for four (4)  State Police Identification Technician 1 position, Fingerprint Identification Unit. These are full time, 35.00 hours per week, Monday through Friday, and located at 1111 Country Club Road in Middletown, CT.

The Fingerprint Identification Unit is responsible for the collection and identification of criminal fingerprints for the State of Connecticut. Additionally, the unit is responsible for the criminal identification related to civil Fingerprint processing for individuals seeking employment and licensing.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in obtaining, classifying, searching, sequencing, comparing and filing of fingerprints.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Takes fingerprint impressions; classifies, compares and files fingerprint impressions utilizing Henry System with extensions and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) fingerprint coding method; assigns primary codes and extends classifications of fingerprints according to procedures; conducts file searches to establish positive identification with prints found in master fingerprint files; checks criminal records and computer master file; takes fingerprints of deceased of questionable or unknown identity; processes latent fingerprints and other identifying material; assists in field and laboratory identification work; may provide training in processing of fingerprint materials to identification technicians of lower grade; may transcribe fingerprint formulas on processed fingerprint cards; may testify in court; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of methods, principles and techniques of fingerprint classification and identification; skill, speed and accuracy in classifying fingerprints; ability to take, develop, analyze, classify, compare and file fingerprints and impressions including latent prints; ability to utilize computer software; some ability to train others in fingerprint classification.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in obtaining, classifying, searching and filing fingerprint material with a law enforcement agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Completion of a course in fingerprint classification from a school recognized by the International Association for Identification may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completed Certificate from a school recognized by the International Association for Identification
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have and maintain sufficient visual acuity to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm in fingerprinting criminals and cadavers and to a considerable degree of eye strain in their work.
