The Department of Veterans Affairs is currently recruiting for a Per Diem Licensed Practical Nurse (per diem) in our Health Care Center.  This position will work third shift with an average of 24 hours per week.

Connecticut has provided care for Veterans and their dependents for over 140 years. At the Department of Veterans Affairs, we provide general medical care for veterans honorably discharged from the Armed Forces. We have a Health Care Facility that provides extended health care to veterans and a domicile that provides residents with a continuum of rehabilitation care.

The Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs is a state agency assisting Connecticut veterans in areas of:

·         The Office of Advocacy and Assistance

·         A Residential Facility

·         The Sgt. John L. Levitow Healthcare Center

·         Cemetery and Memorial Services

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state hospital or facility, works on a daily or hourly basis; renders bedside care or mental health services to the physically or mentally ill in instances where the services of a registered nurse are not required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists doctors and nurses in general care and treatment of patients; measures doses and administers medications including insulin injections; documents medications using appropriate forms; performs narcotic counts; checks and may administer intravenous medications; reports changes in patients to doctors; ensures restraints are applied correctly; transcribes doctors' medication orders; dispenses certain medications in doctors' absence; applies topical medication; takes and charts temperatures, pulses and respirations; performs simple nursing treatments; monitors general patient needs including personal hygiene; reports on patient condition and behavior; keeps unit safe and healthy; administers enemas or suppositories; performs foley catheterization care; orients patients concerning medications and their use; may perform emergency first aid; may perform the full range of duties as described in class specifications for Mental Health Assistant 1 or 2; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care; knowledge of various medications used in conjunction with the physically and mentally handicapped; knowledge of infection control practices; some knowledge of nutrition and diets; basic knowledge of medical and lab sciences; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to keep records; some ability to lead staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License or temporary permit to practice professional nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates will have experience in a Nursing Home and working with veterans.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift/restrain clients/patients; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive/abusive clients/patients; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
