Introduction

The Department of Correction is recruiting for a full time (35 hours per week, Monday - Friday) Vocational Instructor position.  This position will provide instruction and supervision in the vocational subject field of Barbering/Cosmetology to a group of inmates at the Cheshire Correctional Institution.  CT Department of Correction (DOC) is provides Education through its Unified School District #1 (USD #1).  USD #1 is a legally vested school district within the DOC. The mission of USD #1 is to provide quality education programs for incarcerated individuals so that they can make a successful transition to society. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies, use of technology and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster life-long learning, multicultural awareness. Education continues to be one of the Department's most valuable assets in providing opportunities that will support an offender's successful reintegration back into the community.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a Department of Correction School District vocational education section and the Department of Children and Families, Connecticut Juvenile Training School this class provides instruction and supervision in vocational and occupational subjects to a group of inmates and/or residents.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plans and conducts a vocational program in accordance with curriculum established for vocational education developed under guidelines established by the State Department of Education-Division of Vocational Education; conducts classes and shop sessions in vocational and occupational subjects; corrects papers and tests; counsels inmates and/or students and gives individual instruction; maintains tools and equipment; attends staff and other professional meetings; prepares reports on inmates and/or students as required; performs all the security functions necessary to maintain safety of inmates and/or students, associates and other members of the institution populations; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of educational principles, methods and techniques; skill in a particular trade or occupation; teaching ability; ability to work effectively with inmates and/or students; ability to express ideas simply and clearly, orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

High School graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of employment and/or teaching experience in the subject field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Incumbents in this class must meet the State Board of Education requirements to receive initial educator certificate to teach Vocational Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates will have at least one year of teaching experience and/or employment in the subject field.  Preferred candidates will also have knowledge of educational principles, methods, and technique; and skill in the particular trade or occupation. Applicants may be asked to demonstrate usage in a classroom lesson plan as part of the interview process.
