The Department of Children and Families is seeking a public service minded individual to fill the position of Director of Pediatrics and join our senior management team in providing strong leadership and oversight of the agency's pediatric and nursing support for children involved with the Department.  

In this role, the Director of Pediatrics is central to achieving the best possible outcomes for children throughout the state of Connecticut; and for providing leadership over key areas associated with the health needs of children in care while also developing key policy and practice guidelines. The Director of Pediatrics oversees the Division of Health and Wellness consisting of 35+ employees throughout the Department's 6 Regions and Central office.  This position includes responsibility for workforce development in developing Wellness curriculum, oversight and administration of the Medical Review Board, training and consultation. 

The Director of Pediatrics is based in our Central Office, 505 Hudson Street, Hartford, CT location.  This is a full time 40 hours per week position, offering a generous benefits package.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Children and Families, this class is accountable for directing all pediatric medical services to children under the care and custody of the agency and serves as the agency's medical director.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Directs staff, services and programs relating to pediatric care; coordinates, plans and manages division activities; formulates program goals and objectives; develops or assists in development of related policy; interprets and administers pertinent laws; evaluates staff; prepares or assists in preparation of division budget; maintains contacts with individuals both within and outside of the department who might impact on program activities; participates in the development, oversight and administration of DCF's medication management and approval processes; participates in the Medical Review Board; manages and provides services for medically complex children and youth; develops, manages and monitors foster care clinics and the timely provision of multidisciplinary evaluations; may serve as liaison to other state agencies or entities, performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and techniques; considerable knowledge of relevant State and Federal laws, statutes and regulations; considerable knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of medicine, pediatrics and family practice; considerable knowledge of recent developments in the field of medicine and pediatrics; considerable knowledge of state child health programs; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; considerable organizational skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in a hospital or clinic as a physician working with children.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been at the level of Principal Physician.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong pediatrics Clinical Skills, coupled with Public Health Administration experience is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess a license to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut.
2. Incumbents in this class must be Board certified in pediatrics.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
4. Incumbents in this class may be required to provide after-hours on-call consultation and/or to provide after-hours emergency services as directed by the Deputy Commissioner or designee.
