THE POSITION:
The State of Connecticut, Department of Agriculture (DoAg) is now accepting applications from its motivated agency employees for an exciting Agriculture Worker 2 position within the Bureau of Regulatory Services. In this role you will support operations at the Second Chance Large Animal Rehabilitation Facility, located at the York Correctional Institution.

This role supports daily barn operations, animal care, feeding, monitoring, recordkeeping, and coordination with veterinary and Animal Control staff.

ABOUT US:
The mission of the Department of Agriculture is to foster a healthy economic, environmental and social climate for agriculture by developing, promoting, and regulating agricultural businesses; protecting agricultural and aquacultural resources; enforcing laws pertaining to domestic animals; and promoting an understanding among the state's citizens of the diversity of Connecticut agriculture, its cultural heritage and its contribution to the state's economy.

The Bureau of Regulatory Services enforces certain food safety laws and regulations relating to milk safety, produce safety, small poultry slaughter establishments, animal feed including pet food/pet treat manufacturing. The Bureau is responsible for regulating the growing of hemp and registering seed, fertilizer, soil amendment and liming materials. In the domestic animal realm, the Bureau enforces laws and regulations pertaining to animal control, animal population control, importation, and animal health issues. The Bureau also plays a critical role in the control of rabies in domestic animals.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency, facility or institution this class is accountable for performing the most highly skilled agricultural work or acting as a lead over other agricultural workers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs highly skilled agricultural work in one or more area related to general farm labor, farm animals and/or complex plant science, dairy manufacturing and agricultural functions;
  • Leads staff engaged in agricultural work in a related area;
  • Assists professional staff in instructional and research work;
  • Demonstrates and participates in scientific and technical methods and procedures used in agriculture;
  • Uses heavy earthmoving equipment to dig ditches, clean drainage ditches, load gravel and perform general landscape work;
  • Transports equipment, livestock, grains and feed;
  • Plows snow;
  • Assembles and prepares diary ingredients for processing;
  • Ensures standards for quality of dairy products;
  • Repairs complex farm machinery and other equipment;
  • Breeds and neuters animals;
  • Mixes feed rations and maintains weight records for animals;
  • Determines proper lighting and ventilation of greenhouses;
  • Determines methods and procedures to be used in culture and propagation of plants;
  • Manages agricultural products salesroom and sells products;
  • Keeps records, statistical research data, logs and prepares reports;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • methods used in culture and propagation of crops, produce, plants, flowers and orchards;
    • care, health and management of animals;

  • Considerable ability to operate and maintain a wide variety of complex equipment and machinery related to particular agricultural area;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in one of the following areas related to the specific needs of the position:

  • General farm labor (crops, produce, orchards, etc.)
  • Farm animal science and/or maintenance (dairy, horses, poultry, sheep, pigs, etc.)
  • Plant science
  • Dairy manufacturing

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in agriculture or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years for an Associate's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working with large animals (horses, livestock, etc.) in a barn or agricultural setting.
  • Experience operating agricultural equipment (e.g., tractors, loaders, dump trucks).
  • Experience maintaining animal care logs, feeding records, or weight/condition records.
  • Experience working in environments with biosecurity or sanitation protocols.
  • Experience working in a correctional, regulatory, agricultural, or animal care facility.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from machinery or animals.
