The DEEP Boating Division has one seasonal Office Assistant position available. Join a group of passionate full time and seasonal staff to promote clean and safe boating.  Much of the work is office based but diverse in scope. You will answer questions on the phone and in-person about certification, boating laws, class schedules and perform data entry. 

 

Seasonal positions do not include health benefits and cannot exceed 1040 hours.  This position is slated to begin on April 8, 2022 and will be approximately 6 months in duration.  The main location for this  position will be our Marine Headquarters located at 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT.  The schedule will generally be Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, rarely evenings, weekends or holidays may be required.

 

Candidates must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs and able to perform a variety of entry level clerical duties. You may be required to accompany boating staff to various training sessions to provide clerical assistance. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license. Knowledge of boating is a plus.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives and organizes weekly paperwork and reports from seasonal field staff;
  • Writes a weekly summary of issues from field reports;
  • Assists with Safe Boating class data entry;
  • Assists with public outreach events and other office related duties, as needed;
  • Provides general office and operation support. Performs a wide variety of basic clerical functions including but not limited to typing, word processing, filing, answering telephones, handling routine request for information or program materials, assisting with mass mailings, preparing routine forms.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work full-time for the entire recreation season
  • Related experience or training

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
