The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) North Region is recruiting for two (2) full-time, seasonal Licensed Practical Nurses at Camp Quinebaug located in Killingly, CT. Working under the general direction of the Registered Nurse, Camp Administrator or Camp Manager at Camp Quinebaug, these roles function as the camp nurse as mandated for CT Youth Camps licensed by the Office of Early Childhood. Acting as part of the nursing and camp team, these positions are responsible for meeting the nursing needs of the camp, which includes campers and staff working on camp grounds.

Camp Quinebaug is operated by DDS and provides a unique summer day camp experience for approximately 100 school aged children with developmental disabilities in northeastern Connecticut. Children with intellectual disabilities and autism are the primary population served at this camp. This CT Licensed Youth Camp is located on Wauregan Reservoir in Killingly on 11 acres and its waterfront is the only beach on this beautiful waterway. Arts, Crafts, sports and nature activities, music, swimming, boating and fishing are some of the highlights of the lively camp schedule.

These full-time, thirty five (35) hour per week positions are designated to be on first shift. The schedule is Monday through Friday, however the specific hours are to be determined; flexibility is vital to meet the needs of the camp, including training. The first two (2) weeks may have a part-time schedule and involve availability until 8:30 pm.

Requirements for this role:
  • Must be at least 21 years old as of June 4, 2021
  • Must possess a license or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing
  • Must be available to work for the full season which is expected to start June 4, 2021 and end no later than August 26, 2021. The last day of work includes a Saturday to close camp
  • Must complete all required DDS training: Valid CPR Certification, Abuse & Neglect for children and adults, Physical Management Techniques (PMT), Infection Control, Water Safety and Emergency Preparedness
  • Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties and work well with other staff and campers. Including working outside for extended periods and in inclement weather
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment physical exam

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state facility, this class is accountable for rendering bedside care or mental health services to individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities in instances where the services of a registered nurse are not required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists doctors and nurses in the general care and treatment of individuals; measures doses and administers medications including insulin injections; documents medications using appropriate forms; performs narcotic counts; checks and may administer intravenous medications; reports changes in individuals to doctors; ensures that restraints are applied correctly; transcribes doctors medication orders; dispenses certain medications in doctor’s absence; applies topical medication; takes and charts temperatures, pulses and respirations; performs simple nursing treatments; monitors general individual needs including personal hygiene; reports on individual conditions and behavior; keeps the unit safe and healthy; administers enemas or suppositories; performs Foley catheterization care; orients individuals concerning medications and their use; may perform emergency first aid; may drive individuals to necessary appointments/outings; performs related duties as required.

DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES: performs the full range of duties as described in the class specification for the Lead Developmental Services Worker.

DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION SERVICES: performs the full range of duties as described in class specifications for the Mental Health Assistant 1 or Mental Health Assistant 2.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care; knowledge of various medications used in conjunction for the care of individuals who have physical and/or intellectual disabilities; knowledge of infection control practices; some knowledge of nutrition and diets; basic knowledge of medical and lab sciences; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to keep records; some ability to lead staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to those who possess the following experience:
  • Working with individuals with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disabilities and autism spectrum disorders.
  • Working in a camp setting
  • Communicating (written and oral) to multiple diverse populations and skill levels

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES: Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift/restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to some risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
