We are seeking a Connecticut Careers Trainee to work in our Firearms/Tool Marks Unit.

The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is recruiting to fill a Connecticut Careers Trainee (CCT) position with the target job class of Forensic Science Examiner 1, located in the Firearms/Tool Marks Unit within the Division of Scientific Services (DSS).

This is a full time position with a first shift, 40 hour, Monday through Friday schedule. Located in Meriden, CT.

How You Will #MakeAnImpact

The Firearms/Tool Marks Unit receives evidence consisting of various types and calibers of firearms, firearm components, ammunition and ammunition components. The ammunition-type evidence is examined for microscopic markings to identify the possible make and model of the firearms that the ammunition evidence may have been used in. Due to the increase in gun related crimes and federal requirements placed by the ATF on the use of NIBIN, DSS is responsible for entering all evidence into its Firearms Database within 48 hours after submission and review of data must be completed the next day.

Your Role

The ideal candidate for this position must demonstrate strong attention to detail, able to meet tight deadlines and have strong computer skills as the evidence in cases are increasingly more technology based. Due to accreditation requirements concerning proper submission of evidence, strict adherence in following evidence packaging guidelines is necessary in order to protect evidence from being lost or contaminated. The CCT also provides explanations and interpretations of results; testifies in court as an expert witness and may assist in training laboratory staff and law enforcement personnel.

As a trainee position, appointment to positions in this class will be for a period not to exceed a maximum of three years unless there is change in the employing agency or designated target class.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the training program for a professional position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

In a department or institution receives training in introductory governmental work for development of skills and knowledge in field of public administration in order to qualify for advancement into agency professional positions; performs a variety of increasingly difficult duties as skills are acquired during course of training period; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Oral and written communication skills; ability to acquire knowledge and skills required for the target classification; ability to understand, evaluate and solve problems by exercising judgement and logic; ability to read, interpret and understand written material; ability to perform basic arithmetical computations; ability to interpret charts, graphs and tables; learning and reasoning ability; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with superiors, associates and general public; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

NOTE:

  1. If the target job classification has a Substitution Allowed that requires the Bachelor's or Master's degree to be in a specific area(s), then these specific degree areas are required for appointment to the Connecticut Career Trainee classification.
  2. Candidates cannot be appointed until all degree requirements are complete.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with the following will be given preference:

  • Knowledge of forensic laboratory disciplines to include firearms and tool-marks;
  • Knowledge of chain of custody;
  • Knowledge of crime scene processing and documentation techniques; 
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System;
  • Knowledge of forensic testimony in courtroom setting;
  • Master's Degree in Forensic Science or related field;
  • Experience with using Microsoft Office.
