Water Pollution Control Operator Mechanic (40 Hour)

The State of Connecticut, University of Connecticut, Facilities Operations Department has one job opening for a Water Pollution Control Operator Mechanic.  This position is responsible for independently performing highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of all equipment at the Class IV Water Pollution Control Facility to include water reclamation, and associated lift stations.

A Class I Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certification, in accordance with the regulations of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection must be obtained within 24 months from the date of appointment to the Water Pollution Control Operator Mechanic class.  Once the Wastewater Treatment Facility Class I Operator Certificate is obtained, it must be maintained throughout employment with the University.

The Water Pollution Control Operator Mechanic position is a permanent, full-time, 1st Shift 40 hours/week position with a paid half an hour for lunch.  The work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The hourly salary is $27.55.  This position offers a full benefits package including medical and dental insurance. 

This position is categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff.  Incumbent must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that effect campus operations.

A Class I Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certification, in accordance with the regulations of the State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, must be obtained within 24 months from the date of appointment to the Water Pollution Control Operator Mechanic class.  Applicants that currently hold a Class I, Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certificate in accordance with the regulations of the State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection are required to complete the Licenses and Professional Certifications section of the application, recording the information provided on their Class 1 Operator Certificate in the specific fields of Type, issuing Agency, License number and Date Issued on their application.  If this section of the application is not completed in its entirety, the applicant will not be considered qualified for this position.  Applicants are encouraged to record any additional licenses or certificates held in this section of the application.

At the University of Connecticut, Storrs, this class is accountable for independently performing highly skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of all equipment at the Class IV Water Pollution Control Facility to include water reclamation, and all associated lift stations.


Performs specialized maintenance and operational procedures to equipment and machinery used in operation of a wastewater treatment and water reclamation facilities and associated pumping stations; installs, maintains and performs highly skilled mechanical, plumbing and electrical repairs to equipment such as valves, gauges, non-automotive motors, pumps, timers, switches and relays; designs, fabricates, troubleshoots and installs plumbing and electrical modifications to wastewater and water reclamation process equipment and laboratory equipment; performs specialized electric and fuel welding procedures to construct facility infrastructure modifications and/or repairs; locates and corrects stoppages or malfunctions in facility; reads and interprets technical drawings and schematics from blueprints and/or equipment diagrams; programs, operates, troubleshoots and repairs computerized pump operated pump control systems; interacts with contractors and vendors regarding equipment and parts needs; maintains computerized and written records of installations, repairs and maintenance of equipment and machinery; utilizes a computerized database to track flow rates including preparing operational flow graphs and reports in order to assess pumping station flow rate; completes and assigns computer generated work orders to Water Pollution Control Operators and laborers performing routine maintenance procedures; performs wastewater and water reclamation laboratory testing procedures required for facility permit compliance; supervises off-loading of bulk and/or drum wastewater chemicals from trucks and tanker trucks; will perform duties of Water Pollution Control Operator to include, but not limited to general plant operation, monitoring, maintenance, daily chemical and biochemical analyses of wastewater and reclaimed water; records meters and gauges interpreting information according to operating characteristics, prepares operational records and reports ; assists with the fats, oils and grease (FOG) inspection and removal program; performs related duties as required.

In addition, this position leads Water Pollution Control Operator Trainees, Water Pollution Control Operator 1's and other staff as assigned.  Although this position has an established schedule of 1st Shift Monday - Friday, some training may be required on other days of the week, other shifts and on overtime.  Applicants must also be willing to respond to emergencies on overtime (nights, weekends, holidays) and may be required to work on holidays.


Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply methods and practices related to equipment, machinery and non-automotive engines and processes used in a wastewater treatment plant and associated pumping stations; considerable knowledge of tools, materials and terminology used in plumbing, electrical and welding practices; knowledge of principles and practices involved in running a wastewater treatment plant; interpersonal skills; oral and written communications skills; ability to read blueprints; ability to prepare work order estimates; ability to plan, lay out and schedule maintenance assignments; ability to work independently; ability to utilize computer software; ability to conduct routine laboratory and field tests for control of facility operations.


Four (4) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of equipment such as pumps, generators, water lines and non-automotive engines.


One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the repair and maintenance of a Class II, or higher, mechanical biological wastewater treatment plant with a design flow rate of at least 3.0 million gallons per day (MGD).


·        Advanced computer skills.

·        Experience with the following programs is preferred: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, Job Cal or similar program, GEIFIXX or similar program.

·        Education and/or hands on training that is related to environmental, chemistry, and/or mechanical fields.

·        Supervisory experience.

·        Good technical writing skills.

·        Strong mathematical skills.

·        Water Pollution Control Laboratory Courses and/or Certifications.

·        A current State of Connecticut P-1 or P-2 license.


1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current certificates, licenses, and permits including a Class I, Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certificate in accordance with the regulations of the State of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, within 24 months from the date of appointment to the Water Pollution Control Operator Mechanic class.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain specific education and/or experience to meet various certification and/or licensing requirements.


1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.


Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and have risk of injury from equipment, exposure to extreme weather conditions, disagreeable effects of working with chemicals and in uncomfortable positions.
