The DMHAS, Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) seeks qualified individuals for the position of Pharmacy Supervisor within our Ambulatory Care Services, located at 1000 Silver Street, Middletown, CT 06457.  This is a full-time 40 hours per week position.  The schedule is first shift, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The position number is 24988. 

CVH is a state-operated inpatient health care facility providing individuals with services that assist them to better manage their illnesses, achieve personal goals, and develop skills and supports that lead to living the most constructive and satisfying lives possible.

 

In this role you will: 

  • Manage the overall operation and supervision of the pharmacy at CVH; 
  • Supervise approximately 13 pharmacy staff (pharmacists/pharmacy technicians); 
  • Ensure adherence to safety protocols; 
  • Maintain inventory control; and 
  • Disseminate appropriate client medications.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising complete pharmacy operations and providing pharmacologic services to staff members and clients.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans pharmacy work; participates in development of all policies pertaining to medication prescribing, monitoring and storage within facility; develops or makes recommendations on development on medical protocols and standards; prepares reports and correspondence; purchases drugs, chemicals and related medical and surgical equipment in order to maintain necessary level of supplies for efficient operation and inventory control; plans, organizes and directs interpretation and enforcement of pharmacy policies and procedures designed to promote appropriate usage of drugs; identifies and maintains current knowledge of drugs and pharmacy requirements to ensure lowest possible costs, maintain therapeutic equivalents and ensure optimal patient care; attends inservice training programs on various health care services and treatment; develops and provides inservice training programs for nurses, residents and other staff; prepares all necessary reports, inventories, memos, bulletins, supply requisitions and registration forms for controlled drugs; provides pharmacologic consultation, drug information and education to clients, medical, nursing and clinical staff; inspects drug outlets and storage areas in wards or clinics to ensure drug standardization and control; compounds and dispenses medications and other prescription pharmaceutical supplies; dispenses ward stock supplies; may participate on interdisciplinary teams and provide pharmacologic input on patient care; may lead client groups involving medication and other information; may serve as a member of Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee of hospital and implements decisions of committee; may prepare pharmacy budget; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; considerable knowledge of principles and practices of pharmacy and pharmacology and ability to identify drug sources to ensure lowest possible costs, maintain therapeutic equivalents and ensure optimal patient care; considerable knowledge of pharmaceutical economics; knowledge of and ability to manage pharmacologic and health information databases; knowledge of drug purchasing systems; knowledge of principles of quality assurance and quality improvement theories; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; ability to develop and provide inservice training programs; supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience as a hospital or institution pharmacist.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been within the last three (3) years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Successful completion of a post-baccalaureate educational or residency training program in a hospital pharmacy may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess a license as a Registered Pharmacist in Connecticut at the time of appointment.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
