Seasonal Park Ranger Supervisor:   Assists in the management of seasonal operations and programs in a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor. Minimum Age:  18    

Seasonal Park Ranger: Acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park. Minimum Age:  18 

Campground Supervisor:  Assists in managing the total operation of a State-owned campground under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor.  Minimum Age:  18

Camp Office Staff:   Provides general camp office support services. Minimum Age:  16

Seasonal Park Maintenance Supervisor: Assists in the maintenance of a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor and/or an EP Maintainer 3. Minimum Age:  18

Crew Leader: Supervises and works with an assigned crew of Seasonal Maintainers in activities involving the operation and maintenance of DEEP programs and facilities. Minimum Age:  18

Seasonal Maintainer: Performs work related to the maintenance and operation of DEEP managed lands and facilities. Minimum Age:  18  

Boating Education Assistant: Performs voluntary Vessel Safety Checks, educating boaters about Aquatic Invasive Species, conducting light maintenance, assisting with public outreach events, and reporting on boat launch conditions. Minimum Age:  18

State Land Wildlife Impoundment Maintenance: Maintain adequate access to these impoundments, dike maintenance, and in some instances, active water level management to provide habitat for ducks and other wetland wildlife species.   Minimum Age:  18

GIS Mapping: Assist with GIS mapping (ArcMap10.2), data bases, habitat technical assistance, and other administrative duties. Individuals will have the opportunity to work closely with state agency wildlife biologists and a wide range of staff responsible for managing wildlife habitat across the state. Minimum Age:  18

Conservation Education/Firearms Safety Program (Office Assistants):Provide assistance to the public with wildlife sightings, general wildlife questions, and nuisance or distressed wildlife.The position is strictly office work, but are quite diverse in scope. Minimum Age: 21

Hartford Wildlife Division Main Office (Office Assistant):Work closely with and learn from wildlife biologists and to assist the public with wildlife questions.Minimum Age:  21

Wildlife Habitat Program (Maintainers): Assist in maintaining public access areas and conducting habitat enhancement projects on wildlife management areas statewide. Minimum Age:  18

Pay rates are $11.00 -14.00/hr. depending on relevant skills and experience. No benefits. 

Length of positions:  anticipated start dates vary by position and runs through the recreation season; anticipated duration is a maximum of 1030 hours.  Most positions are typically first shift, but other positions will be second or third shift. Typically positions are 5 days per week, and include mandatory weekend shifts.

Selection Plan

These positions are non-competitive. Open to the public.

Selected candidates must be fluent in English and be at least 16 years old, 18 years old or 21 years old, depending on the position. 

Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Seasonal Park Ranger Supervisor:   Assists in the management of seasonal operations and programs in a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor.  Resolves complaints and other issues or refers them to the proper authority; trains, supervises and schedules Seasonal Park Rangers; evaluates work performance; acts as primary visitor contact; assists with protective duties as required; answers telephones and performs daytime radio dispatch duties.   Minimum Age:  18.  Special Requirements:  Extensive knowledge and experience in outdoor recreation management preferred; must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.   Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-April – Columbus Day

Seasonal Park Ranger:   Acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park.  Assists with operational, maintenance and protective duties as needed; may answer telephones and perform radio dispatch duties. Minimum Age:  18. Special Requirements:  Familiarity with operation of outdoor recreation facilities preferred; must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-May – Columbus Day.

Campground Supervisor:  Assists in managing the total operation of a State-owned campground under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor; acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park.  Resolves complaints and other issues or refers them to the proper authority; oversees opening and closing procedures; trains, supervises and schedules camp office staff; evaluates work performance; registers campers; checks in reservations; collects camping fees; directs visitors; provides directions; answers questions about the campground, State camping rules and regulations, campground activities, and the local area.   Minimum Age:  18   Special Requirements:  Experience in campground management and/or previous retail/customer service experience preferred; must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.   Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-May – Columbus Day.

Interpretive Guide (Meigs Point Nature Center):  Acts as primary visitor contact, works to increase the public's understanding, appreciation, enjoyment of, and concern for the natural resources of our State Parks; conducts a variety of interpretive programs including, but not limited to, lectures, classes, tours, field walks, canoe trips, campfire programs, and special events to a wide variety of audiences; may assist with program development; cleans Nature Center, displays and animal cages/tanks; feeds and cares for animals. Minimum Age:  18. Special Requirements:  A background in either the natural sciences or education is preferred; may be required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.   Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-February – mid-August, mid-April – mid-October and mid-May – mid-November.

Seasonal Park Maintenance Supervisor:   Assists in the maintenance of a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor and an EP Maintainer 3.  Trains, supervises and schedules Seasonal Maintainers; evaluates work performance; assists in job planning and scheduling and in preparation of materials lists; operates machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, tractors, medium duty vehicles, and power tools; performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment; may perform highly-skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs or other skilled trade; may drive vehicles rated at 3/4 Ton Gross Vehicle Weight or less. Minimum Age: 18   Special Requirements: Extensive knowledge and experience in maintenance of a recreational facility and/or a related skilled trade; must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.   Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-April – mid-October.    

Crew Leader: Supervises and works with an assigned crew of Seasonal Maintainers in activities involving the operation and maintenance of DEEP programs and facilities.  May assist in job planning and in preparation of materials lists; may operate machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, tractors, medium duty vehicles, and power tools; may perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment; may drive vehicles rated at 3/4 Ton Gross Vehicle Weight or less.   Minimum Age:  18   Special Requirements:  Minimum one season satisfactory DEEP or related work experience; must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-April – mid-October.    

Seasonal Maintainer:   Performs work related to the maintenance and operation of DEEP managed lands and facilities including, but not limited to, litter pickup, cleaning, mowing, raking, and painting. May use hand tools; may direct traffic in parking lots; may drive vehicles rated at 3/4 Ton Gross Vehicle Weight or less. Positions are also available for those with additional levels of training and experience. These positions involve the use of machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, tractors, medium duty vehicles and the use of skills in carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs, grounds maintenance.   Minimum Age:  18.   Special Requirements:  Previous experience in janitorial work, landscaping or a skilled trade preferred; must possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license. Approximate Dates of Employment:  mid-April – mid-October. 

Boating Education Assistant: Interacting and educating boaters about clean and safe boating practices at boat launches throughout the state (Pumpout locations, Aquatic Nuisance Species, No Discharge Areas, Life Jackets, etc); Conducting vessel safety checks as developed by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary; Encouraging people to become clean boaters by having them sign the Clean Boater Pledge and discussing the Clean Boater Action Guide; Closing the parking lot if it becomes full; Reporting condition of the launch; Light maintenance at the boat launch; Submitting weekly summaries detailing the use of the launch;  Assisting with public outreach events, as needed; and Other duties, as assigned. 

State Land Wildlife Impoundment Maintenance: Mowing and clearing of impoundments using small equipment (i.e., brush cutters, DR mowers, and handheld tools). Manipulating water levels using weir boards. Clearing beaver debris from inlet pipes. Updating Microsoft Excel databases.

GIS Mapping: Supports the Habitat Management Program by performing the following duties under direct supervision of Wildlife Biologists: Using ArcMap10.2 to create, organize, and maintain maps for state and private land habitat management assessments, plans, projects, site designations, hunting review team reports, and various technical guidance; Gather and summarize data to provide a range of technical assistance to private landowners, conservation groups, and municipal, state, and federal agencies via oral and written communication; Update and maintain project and expenditure tracking data bases; Assess state and private land habitat for wildlife habitat management potential via site visits to aid in preparation of habitat management plans and projects proposals and/or technical assistance, Assist in the preparation of general technical assistance material in cooperation with Natural Resources Conservation Service and other conservation partners as needed; Conduct field inspections of State agricultural lands to document land use activities and Licensee compliance with established license agreements. Respond to phone calls from the public relating to various Wildlife Division programs and responsibilities (e.g., state land access, hunting regulations, wildlife identification, wildlife-human conflicts, etc.), and provide written guidance and outreach materials as needed. Other duties may include assisting seasonal maintainers, and/or biologists with habitat management field tasks including vegetative surveys, boundary posting, and mowing and herbiciding to control invasives (applicant may be requested to obtain a DEEP pesticide applicator’s license and assist in applying herbicides on undesirable vegetation – training, study documents, and testing will be provided by DEEP at no cost to the employee). Additional duties may include pelt tagging, data entry, basic report preparation, filing, and drafting purchase requests. Opportunities to assist on other field projects (e.g., goose banding, wildlife surveys, forest inventory, public outreach, etc.) may be made available as time allows and according to employee interest.

Conservation Education/Firearms Safety Program (Office Assistants):The selected candidate will be working with the Conservation Education/Firearms Safety (CE/FS) Program, which provides classes for firearms hunting, bowhunting, and trapping certification throughout the State of Connecticut. Works with volunteer CE/FS Instructors and manages new hunting class information and enters it onto the DEEP website; keeps track of student registrations; and packs hunting class materials and delivers these materials to instructors. Once classes are concluded and class materials are collected from instructors, classes are processed for certification, registration card information is completed, and registration cards are filed. Responsible for updating the CE/FS Coordinator’s calendar. The Seasonal Resource Assistant will also be responsible for answering the phones. This includes answering any questions about certification, hunting laws, class schedules, and also providing assistance to the public with nuisance and distressed wildlife or determining who would best assist the caller. The position requires issuing hunting, trapping, and fishing licenses using a computer. Will be required to use a cash register. Completes daily sales reports and reconciliation. Provides support and assistance to other Wildlife Division programs. Various clerical duties, such as entering data using a variety of computer programs and direct mailings.

Hartford Wildlife Division Main Office (Office Assistant): The Seasonal Resource Assistant will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks, including but not limited to handling incoming phone calls relating to animal damage and distressed wildlife, assisting with the administration of licenses for the Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators (NWCOs), supporting staff with beaver damage complaints and permits, preparing NDDB reviews, administering a variety of state permits and authorizations, and managing paperwork for as needed. This job will include managing incoming emails and phone calls from the general public, NWCOs, scientists, wildlife rehabilitators, hunters, and trappers. In addition, the position will entail supporting staff as needed with the implementation of the permit-required hunting areas program and other office functions, such as data entry using various computer programs, scanning, disseminating permit documents, filing, grading exams, and assisting with mailings. Issues a variety of permits and licenses using Filemaker Pro and Microsoft Access databases. Uses ArcMap to create maps for NDDB reviews. Provides support and assistance to other Wildlife Division programs.

Wildlife Habitat Program (Maintainers): Maintain parking lots and service roads (e.g., trash pick-up, mowing, weed control);constructing, installing and maintaining signs; clearing downed trees; painting and installing gates; controlling invasive plants and maintaining early successional habitats (e.g., old fields, grasslands, shrublands, young forests) through mechanical means and herbicide applications; planting trees and shrubs; installing or maintaining deer proof fencing; maintaining water control structures and clearing dams of invading vegetation;constructing, installing and monitoring nest boxes; boundary posting; maintaining the Wildlife Division’s office building, grounds and associated facilities, including outbuildings, parking areas, service roads and shooting range at the Franklin Swamp Wildlife Management Area in North Franklin (e.g., lawn mowing, grounds upkeep, trash removal, cleaning restrooms and kitchen area, washing windows, cleaning floors, painting and staining, service road maintenance and sign posting); maintaining boundaries and structures at public shooting ranges in Glastonbury and Tolland; and other duties as assigned. Opportunities to assist on other field projects (e.g., Canada goose banding, bird surveys, forest inventory, public outreach, etc.) may be made available as time allows and according to employee interest.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred applicants will be able to work full-time for the entire recreation season and have related experience or training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
