Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites its qualified DOT employees to apply for the 40 hour per week Seasonal Draw Bridge position located in Mystic, CT. The Seasonal position is from May 1, 2020 through October 31, 2020 and the schedule would be as follows: Wednesday through Sunday from 4:00 pm to midnight, with Monday and Tuesday off. The incumbent would be required to report back to their permanent job assignment location at the end of the season.

This Drawbridge Attendant position is vital to the DOT's operation of the Mystic River Bridge in Mystic, CT. It is a frontline position that is staffed 24 hours per day on 3 shifts during the summer months from May 1st through October 31st. More importantly, the Drawbridge Attendant position is required to be staffed by mandate of the U.S. Coast Guard in order to maintain the operation of the movable bridges at all times during the specified dates. The Attendant must remain on site and not leave his/her post until properly relieved. Providing a safe, efficient service to ensure compliance with statutory obligations is the Bureau's most important mission.

Each employee at this location is assigned to a specific shift, during which he/she is responsible for the following:

* operation of the bridge itself
* reports any electrical/mechanical/boating issues
* maintains an accurate daily bridge log and reports all incidents in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations 

Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 30-mile residency from the job location. Applicants invited to interview will be requested to supply a copy of their Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

This class is accountable for performing the full range of basic tasks in the maintenance and operation of moveable bridges under the jurisdiction of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Maintains the operation of moveable bridges in accordance with the standard operating procedures; keeps the bridge control houses neat and clean at all times; removes and disposes of trash; and clears the access of snow and ice; reports all mechanical problems to a designated Department of Transportation (DOT) representative as directed; maintains a neat and accurate daily bridge log or diary; logs and reports all incidents to a designated DOT representative as directed; complies with all State laws, Federal laws and U.S. Coast Guard regulations; must remain on site and not leave the post until properly relieved; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some knowledge of the physical properties of standard maintenance materials; some knowledge of mechanical principles; some knowledge of the basic practices of the maintenance trades; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to use hand and power tools and make minor repairs to simpler mechanical equipment; ability to operate equipment listed on the attached addendum; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; some ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain an appropriate valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license and other licenses required by governmental authorities.
2. Attendant must be able to train new employees and relief employees to perform the duties and responsibilities of this class as required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina and physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness so as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination will be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may have to work outdoors in weather extremes. They must be constantly aware of all existing weather and traffic conditions (marine and vehicular). Attendants must stay alert while working in the environment of potentially dangerous machinery, and remain alert for the duration of their shifts.
