Who We Are:
The Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance Authority (PFMLIA) is a quasi-governmental agency formed by statute and signed into law by Governor Ned Lamont in 2019.  Our mission is to help Connecticut’s workforce navigate health challenges and life changes with greater financial security.  Through a trust funded by employees, the Authority makes benefits payments to eligible employees when either the employee or their family member takes a leave from work to care for themselves or a family member.

The Role:

We are seeking an adaptable, creative-thinking, self-starter for our newly established and fast paced authority. Quick learning and key communication is vital for successful delivery of services.  The Chief of Staff will serve as a highly collaborative team member of the CT PFMLIA. This crucial role will work both within the Authority and across state agencies to help ensure that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Authority can proactively execute the plans of the Authority.

Location:
Our home office is conveniently located in the greater Hartford area!  Willingness to travel throughout Connecticut and the northeast corridor, as well as periodic travel to other states as needed.
Hours: This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, forty hours per week. Hours of work may include evenings and weekends.
Benefits:  Employees of the PFMLIA will be quasi state employees and will be eligible for group life insurance and health and dental benefits.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Actively play a substantial role in the strategic development and communication of operational business plans in close step with the CEO;
  • Act as a focal point of contact to address and resolve critical issues while involving CEO when appropriate;
  • Partner with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and leadership team to assure effective operations;
  • Actively lead research associated with business issues and plan formulation including development of business cases;
  • Take charge of cross-functional strategic projects executed in partnership with leadership;
  • Stimulate critical thinking in support of business direction, including proactively identifying and managing impact of strategic insights organization;
  • At the direction or absence of the CEO, serves as a primary liaison between the board, legislative, or other constituents with respect to any issues regarding the statute and the Authority’s operations;
  • Optimally facilitate large scale meetings and strategic workshops, including preparation and driving tangible outcomes;
  • Develop communication vehicles (e.g., presentations, speeches);
  • Take ownership for special projects and collaboratively engages cross-functional areas - drive information gathering, develop recommended decision paths, and drive outstanding execution;
  • Experience interacting with state officials at varying levels;
  • Performs related duties as required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, communications or closely related field;
  • Ten (10) years of management experience;
  • Previous experience with Chief of Staff type role;
  • Experience sharing authority and responsibility in fast paced work environment;
  • Experience providing support, supervision, and strategic mentorship to experienced colleagues;
  • Experience with project and time management, including organization, and follow-through, while balancing and prioritizing multiple activities and responsibilities;
  • Experience making presentations to a variety of partners on purpose, policies and functions;
  • Experience engaging in problem solving and taking initiative, while utilizing a solutions-centered approach and exhibiting flexibility and good judgement in a sophisticated organizational ecosystem.
