Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Developmental Services (DDS) - Central Office - has one (1) current full-time job opportunity for a Nurse Clinical Instructor (General) position based in Willimantic, CT in the Educational Support & Staff Development Division.

This position plays an important role in the delivery of medical based training to both DDS employees as well as Private Sector employees.

This is a full-time thirty-five (35) hour per week position. The work schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00am - 3:30pm. However, must be flexible and willing and able to work off hours, including some holidays, nights and weekends as needed in order to meet the training needs of the agency.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state health care facility or institution this class is accountable for developing curricula and teaching the principles and practices of nursing and health related subjects to nursing personnel and interdisciplinary staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

This position plays an important role in the delivery of medical based training to both DDS employees as well as Private Sector employees. Coordinates and conducts infection control classes, the 21 hour medication administration class, and co-instructs classes for both public and private nurses. Serves as Medication Coordinator for the North region. Coordinates and conducts the re-certification class and administers the recertification exam for both public and private agencies. Additionally, the Nurse Clinical Instructor conducts tutoring for staff that requires additional help to pass the initial exam and a 1.5-hours of review for each individual staff when there is a medication error. Will maintain the OSHA mandated Hep-B vaccine program. Related duties include being part of curriculum development for health related topics and updating curriculum. Will be required to attend state wide meetings. Will perform related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of nursing in appropriate specialty serviced by agency; knowledge of teaching, counseling and evaluation principles and techniques; considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to develop curricula; ability to interview; ability to identify the potential of applicants for health careers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in hospital or institutional nursing as a registered professional nurse in the appropriate specialty serviced by the agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of Head Nurse working with the type of individuals serviced by the agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. A Bachelor's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
2. A Master's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Endorsed Instructor preferred
  • Teaching/training experience is preferred
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word & Outlook is required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills is required
  • Will need to be able to work off hours including holidays, nights and weekend to meet training needs.
  • Ability to travel statewide

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license as a registered professional nurse in Connecticut.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
