At the State of Connecticut, Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP), we are dedicated to conserving, improving and protecting our natural resources and the environment and increasing the availability of cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy.  

DEEP has a current job opportunity for an Engineer Intern within the Bureau of Air Management, Planning and Standards Division, Data Management and Network Planning Group. Engineer Interns receive training under the direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of up to one year before being promoted to the target class of Air Pollution Control Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period.  

This position provides a unique opportunity to join a team committed to improving air quality in Connecticut by assisting in performing quality assurance and quality control on data generated by the state’s ambient air quality monitoring network and associated data management systems.  This position may also assist with developing analytics to support communication tools for air quality data users including the regulated community, academia, environmental advocates and the general public.  

This position is full-time, 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday.

Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Environmental or Physical Sciences, or Environmental Engineering or a related engineering discipline is required. 

 

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.

The specific duties include:

  • Assist in performing engineering analysis and associated study of air quality monitoring data for the determination of trends, interrelationships, potential sources, modes of pollutant and precursor fate and transport, and compliance with air quality standards.
  • Assist in assembly of complex data sets and apply statistical analysis tools for data analysis, transformation, reduction and validation while maintaining strict data integrity.
  • Apply software-based tools to perform various engineering analyses, visualizations and transformations of raw air monitoring data. Assist in interpretation and application of state and federal environmental statutes, regulations and associated guidance in the area of air quality monitoring and planning.
  • Assist in preparing engineering studies, documents and plans.
  • May assist in performing reviews, evaluations and updates of quality control procedures for calibration, operation and auditing of air pollution monitoring equipment to further understand the engineering and operating principles underlying how air quality monitoring field data is generated and quality assurance program requirements are implemented.
  • May assist in performing studies of effectiveness of air pollution monitoring equipment and instruments with respect to data quality.
  • Perform related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

General knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods; skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments; considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's degree in the discipline required by the target class.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Strong computer skills in data analysis and presentation, proficiency with spreadsheets and additional software experience with applications such as databases and geographic information systems

Training and/or knowledge in applying basic federal/state laws, rules, and regulations;

Ability to comprehend and follow relatively complex technical, oral and written instructions;

Training in and ability to prepare clear and technically sound reports and presentations;

Some knowledge of fundamental principles involved in air pollution control, prevention and abatement, computer modeling, or meteorological forecasting;

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;

Strong oral and written communication skills; and

Training and/or experience working in a team as well as independently.
