DRS's Fiscal/Processing Unit within the Operations Bureau is currently seeking to hire a Mail Handler for the mailroom. We work in a highly confidential, professional and fast paced environment. The job duties of this position, include but are not limited to, sorting, distributing and routing incoming and interoffice mail; operating postage application equipment, mail inserters and weight scales, stamping postage, franked or metered mail, driving of state vehicles in the delivery of US and interagency mail.

Additionally, you may be required to maintain daily cash records, schedule vehicle maintenance, provide postal service assistance to customers and other related duties as required. 

The reporting location for this position is 450 Columbus Blvd in Hartford, CT.

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week position, with the scheduled hours 5:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Monday - Friday.

Selection Plan

This position is non-competitive. Open to the public.

The candidate selected for this position must maintain a current valid driver’s license and an excellent driving record, with the ability to drive on highways and/or long distances (to Bridgeport, Norwich and Waterbury).

Much of the work involved is physical in nature and requires standing, lifting, bending and carrying items that may weigh up to 60 lbs. Also, the moving of recycling barrels which are on wheels and may weigh up to 225 lbs. Therefore, incumbents in this class must have and maintain adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity to be able to perform the required duties.

Once selected for employment, the incumbent will be subject to fingerprint screening, a background and tax compliance check and may be required to have a physical examination.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing and distribution of mail.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Sorts, distributes and routes incoming and interoffice mail; operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; weighs and stamps postaged, franked or metered mail; drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail; picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices; signs for insured, certified, registered and special delivery mail; updates and maintains records; may maintain daily cash records; schedules vehicle maintenance; provides postal service assistance to customers; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail; some oral and written communication skills; some interpersonal skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; ability to utilize computer software; ability to operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment; some mechanical ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience of US Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail

• Experience operating Neopost DS1200 G3 inserter or similar machine

• Experience operating IS-5000 postage machine or similar

• Ability to utilize computer software in conjunction with USPS electronic files

• Ability to perform basic arithmetic

• Strong organizational skills

• Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
