DOC is seeking a highly motivated applicant for a Dental Hygienist position. Expected duties include performing hygienist responsibilities, performing X rays , sterlizing instruments, oral hygiene exams, dental cleaning and prophylaxis.

This is a Hazardous Duty Position and offers a pension plan, the State Employees Retirement System Tier IV. It also offers excellent health benefits along with additional supplemental benefits.

Selection Plan

These are all full-time (35) hours per week positions, first shift. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current CT Dental Hygiene License.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In state facilities this class is accountable for providing direct clinical dental hygiene services to clients.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs clinical dental services including dental prophylaxis, facial and oral tissue exams; participates in oral cancer exams, topical fluoride treatments, and blood pressure evaluations; takes and processes radiographs; charts abnormalities; screens clients for systemic disease which may appear in oral cavity; conducts dental health assessments; develops and implements dental hygiene care plans; provides admission and discharge dental hygiene assessments including plans for continuing care; assures that dental hygiene care programs carried out thoroughly to meet schedules; consults with and makes recommendations to dentist concerning dental health needs; provides limited and informal training to aide staff with regard to signs and symptoms of dental disease, dysfunction, injury and prevention of same; develops and implements educational programs for clients with regard to personal oral hygiene; performs limited nutritional counseling; attends meetings and reports on dental problems; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of the principles and practices of dental hygiene; oral and written communication skills; considerable interpersonal skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from a two (2) year program in dental hygiene from an institution approved by the Dental Commission.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Good communication;
  • able to work in correctional setting;
  • able to work under general supervision without Dentist or Assistant on site;
  • preferred to have a local Anesthesia certificate and eligible to become a mid level provider.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license as a Registered Dental Hygienist in Connecticut.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain clients and may be exposed to disagreeable conditions, communicable diseases and risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive clients.
