Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites applications for a Connecticut Careers Trainee Position (target class of Transportation Rail Officer 1) within the Bureau of Public Transportation, Office of Rail in New Haven. This position is 40 hours per week, with a Monday through Friday schedule.

The Connecticut Careers Trainee is entry-level position. The successful candidate will receive training to develop technical rails skills and knowledge, and will be eligible for promotion to the classification of a Transportation Rail Officer 1 following satisfactory completion of the two year training program.

This position will review/monitor the day to day passenger rail operations of the Hartford Line Service, Shore Line East and New Haven Line services. Attend meetings, respond to daily calls, concerns and complaints that will develop from passengers/ stakeholders who will ride on the lines. Help coordinate, plan and support activities related to all passenger and freight rail operations in the state. Review monthly invoices that are submitted by Amtrak and TASI for the operation of Shore LineEast and the Hartford Line. Coordinate service related activities with stakeholders, Amtrak, and the Hartford Line Service provider. Provide oversight of freight rail operations on Connecticut owned and privately owned rail lines within the State. Freight railroad oversight duties include, but are not limited to, coordination of freight railroad operations meetings, freight railroad compliance with the Rail Safety Improvement Act, and tracking of Capital investments. Assist in the development of passenger and freight rail operating agreements. 

NOTE: The starting salary for a candidate with a Bachelor's degree is SG 15, Step 1. The starting salary for a candidate with a Master's degree is SG 15, Step 2. The salary increases to SG 15, Step 5 during the second year of training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

NOTE:

  1. If the target job classification has a Substitution Allowed that requires the Bachelor's or Master's degree to be in a specific area(s), then these specific degree areas are required for appointment to the Connecticut Career Trainee classification.
  2. Candidates cannot be appointed until all degree requirements are complete.
