The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites applications for a Transportation Maintainer 3 (CHAMPS Service Patrol). This position is 37.5 hours per week and is located in the Old Saybrook Repair Facility. The hours of operation are Monday - Friday with two (2) shifts from 5:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm.
The goals of the Connecticut Highway Assistance Motorist Patrol (CHAMP) Program are to provide safety to motorists, quickly clear incidents from the roadway, restore traffic capacity and reduce congestion, and assist in the coordinated multi-agency response to traffic events. The CHAMP vehicles play an important role patrolling areas to quickly and safely remove minor obstructions before they create a more serious impact. There are currently 15 CHAMP trucks, working out of 8 different garages.
Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; this includes mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
Incumbents in this class will also be required to have a 30-mile residency from the job location.
In order to be eligible to apply, applicants must hold a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B with Tank endorsement, a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC), and meet the Minimum and Preferred Requirements listed below.
Interviews will be limited to candidates whose experience and training most closely meet the requirements of the position.
Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Class A or B) with Tank endorsement and a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview, or they will be immediately disqualified; as well as a thoroughly completed Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement (CTDOT-CDL-1).

In addition to other duties incumbents in this class may be required to receive training in, stand by for and
respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at State-owned airports; performs related duties as required.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following CHAMP Driver knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Mechanical and Technical Knowledge & Skills:
*A basic knowledge of automotive mechanical systems and the ability to perform basic troubleshooting and minor repairs.
Communications:
*Ability and demeanor to communicate with the public, motorists, Highway Operations Center personnel, State Police and other emergency responders in a courteous and professional manner at all times.
*Knowledge and understanding of the CTDOT Highway Operations Center chain of command and their role in the command structure.
*Sufficient knowledge and understanding of the goals and objectives of the National Incident Management System (NIMS), the Incident Command System (ICS) and the Traffic Incident Management System (TIMS) in order to operate within a Unified Command Structure while maintaining the ability to independently evaluate situations and by applying their training, established Standard Operating Procedures and good judgement, make appropriate decisions for the safe mitigation of the known or identified hazards.
