At the State of Connecticut, Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP), we are dedicated to conserving, improving and protecting our natural resources and the environment and increasing the availability of cheaper, cleaner and more reliable energy. The mission of the Bureau of Natural Resources (BNR) is to conserve and enhance Connecticut’s fish, wildlife and forest resources and to enhance opportunities for public use and appreciation. BNR is charged with managing the state’s natural resources (particularly fish, wildlife, and forests) through a program of regulation, management, research, and public education.
BNR's Fisheries Division has current opportunities for four (4) Seasonal Resource Assistants to support the management of recreational fisheries. These positions will be led by a fisheries biologist and will be part of a team that will be primarily responsible for the nighttime collection of fish using electrofishing equipment.
The jobs have two primary areas of focus:
From April to June the effort focuses on lakes, ponds, and larger rivers. Employees will report to the Marlborough, CT, field office in the late afternoon to prepare the equipment for evening work.
From June until August, effort will shift to collection of fish community data from wadeable rivers and streams. Crew members will arrive approximately 7:00 am each morning and will travel to various scheduled sites to collect fish using electrofishing gear.
Duration of Positions: Employment will begin in April and end in late August.
Location: Positions will work out of the Fisheries Division – Marlborough Field Office located at 209 Hebron Road, Marlborough, CT
Pay Rate: Pay rate varies from $12 to $14 per hour depending on education and experience. There are no benefits or paid holidays.
Hours will primarily be during late afternoon into the night.
Salary: Pay rate is $12-14/hr. depending on relevant education and experience. No benefits.
Duration of Position: Employment will begin in April and end in late August.

The selected candidates must be fluent in English, be at least 18 years old and possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
The selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.
The job has two primary areas of focus.
From April to June the effort focuses on lakes, ponds, and larger rivers. Employees will report to the Marlborough, CT, field office in the late afternoon to prepare the equipment for evening work. The crew will arrive at the scheduled waterbody approximately 45 minutes prior to sunset, where they will assemble equipment and prepare to start sampling the fish community. Once sampling, jobs include driving the boat, netting fish, measuring, identifying, and taking scale samples from collected fish, and recording data. Upon completion of the sample the crew will return to the Marlborough field office, usually around 12:00- 1:00 am.
From June until August, effort will shift to collection of fish community data from wadeable rivers and streams. Crew members will arrive approximately 7:00 am each morning and will travel to various scheduled sites to collect fish using electrofishing gear. Similar to lake and pond project, the river and stream fish will be netted, measured, identified and recorded.
Individuals may also assist in the operation of spawning marshes for Northern Pike, assist in the daily stocking and operations at state trout hatcheries, enter fish community and population data, and conduct counts/interviews of people engaged in fishing.
College level course work and/or experience in one or more of the following: outdoor education, aquatic biology, ecology, fisheries biology or management, and environmental science.
Experience with Connecticut’s freshwater fish is a plus.
Applicants should have a background and strong interest in outdoor education and/or fisheries, and be comfortable working outdoors (under a variety of weather conditions), weekends, or late into the night.
1. Incumbents in these classes who are assigned as patrol persons or supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.
2. Incumbents in these classes may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:
a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.
b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.
c. College training in a specific field.
d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.
3. Incumbents performing patrol officer functions must currently possess Police Officer Standard Training (POST) certification or be eligible for POST recertification without completing the Basic Training program again (i.e. must be current or retired within two (2) years of last POST certified required employment) or Connecticut State Police (CSP) Academy certification (must be current or retired within two (2) years of last CSP certified required employment). Must pass a seasonal patroller training course as approved by the Connecticut State Police.
4. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.
1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.
2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
