Wetlands Restoration Specialist (37.5 Hour)

DEEP's Bureau of Central Services, Engineering and Field Support Services Division is seeking to promote a current agency employee to a Wetlands Restoration Specialist based in Thomaston, CT. This position will be accountable for performing the most complex wetlands restoration activities.

This position is Mon - Fri, 8:00am – 4:30pm (37.5 hrs.)

The selected candidate must have a valid CDL Class A driver’s license.

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for performing the most complex wetlands restoration activities.

Performs specialized tasks involved in restoration of wetlands; performs maintenance and repair work on existing control structures such as ditches, tide gates, dikes and culverts; operates heavy equipment such as clamshell diggers, rotary diggers, bulldozers, bucket loader, backhoe and dump truck; performs complex mechanical repairs such as timing, working on distributors, adjusting carburetors, flushing out brake or fuel systems, etc.; uses, maintains and repairs hand and power tools and equipment; keeps records and prepares reports; repairs and maintains equipment; performs road maintenance; may perform carpentry and painting tasks; may do planting and transplanting; performs related duties as required.

Knowledge of methods of wetlands restoration; basic knowledge of physical properties of standard construction materials; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; skill in operating heavy equipment; ability to effectively operate specialized equipment in wetlands environment; some ability to utilize computer software.

Four (4) years of experience in agricultural, construction or general maintenance and repair work.

• Experience operating specialized low center of gravity tractors and mowers and other specialized heavy construction equipment in areas that are subject to surface water and potential flooding.
• Experience relating to water control structures, tide/flapper gates, weir board structures, and flood control gate valves.
• Experience performing various types of vegetation control including the use of herbicides.
• Experience leading and/or supervisory large crews of full time and/or seasonal staff
• Experience with computer programs and record keeping and scheduling work.
• Experience in Flood control dam maintenance and operation in order to retain Federal Certifications.
• Current herbicide applicators license or other herbicide related license.

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and exposed to discomfort from extreme weather conditions, insects and risk of injury from equipment.
