Burr Pond State Park in Torrington has an interesting historical past as the site of the world's first condensed milk factory. Gail Borden, discoverer of the process of milk preservation by evaporation and condensation, built the factory here in 1857. The new milk product proved to be of great value, particularly to the Union Army during the Civil War. Fire destroyed the mill in 1877. Burr Pond State Park offers swimming, picnicking, hiking and a number of other outdoor activities.
This Unit of the CT State Park and Forest System also provides staff support to Dennis Hill and Haystack Mountain State Parks and a number of other state properties in that area of the state.
Each season we hire seasonal employees in a number of different positions to welcome and support the many visitors who come to the park.
