PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in supervising the production of goods and services in a large sheltered or industrial workshop or community based supported employment.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This class is designed solely for use in formal job production settings and is not intended for use in recreation, arts and crafts or activities of daily living programs.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general direction of the supervisor responsible for vocational training.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises a staff of therapy assistants, mental health workers, vocational instructors, industries instructors, maintainers or others assigned to workshop activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Solicits and prepares workshop contracts or community based jobs from businesses or private industry;
  • Sets up and reviews production schedules and lays out work;
  • Assigns clients to appropriate workshop jobs;
  • Trains and/or evaluates clients in various work skills;
  • Determines material and equipment needs and prepares appropriate requisitions;
  • Keeps machinery and equipment in proper running order;
  • Maintains inventory records, time cards, production cards, client and staff attendance records, client payroll and pay slips and other records pertaining to manufacture and/or sale of workshop items or services;
  • Conducts time studies;
  • Supervises a staff of instructors or aides;
  • Meets with vocational rehabilitation or education staff to discuss individual client work behavior and determine appropriateness of new referrals;
  • When appropriate, contacts sales personnel or customers;
  • May set up workshop budget;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • industrial contract procurement and pricing procedures;
    • methods, materials and equipment involved in workshop and industries operation;
    • production planning and control techniques;
  • Considerable

  • Ability to
    • train clients and staff in workshop jobs or community based supportive employment;
    • evaluate vocational potential and actual work progress of agency clients;
    • design and maintain workshop records;
    • utilize computer software;
    • read and interpret plans, blueprints and diagrams;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in production work, special education or vocational evaluation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been in supervising, training and/or evaluating individuals with disabilities in a sheltered workshop program or community based supported employment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training with courses in behavioral sciences, mental health or special education may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of three (3) years.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury and to moderately disagreeable conditions while providing services to clients.
