PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut, Storrs this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the operations and maintenance of the Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF), to include water reclamation and associated lift stations to the facilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of employees of a higher grade to whom the on-the-job training, or supervision has been delegated to by the Water Resource Recovery Facility Superintendent; may work more independently with acquired experience at the discretion of the Water Resource Recovery Facility Superintendent or the Water Resource Recovery Facility Assistant Superintendent.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives on-the-job training to perform tasks as outlined in the specifications for the class of Water Pollution Control Operator 1; 
  • Assists in operating, monitoring and maintaining water pollution control facilities equipment for the processing and disposal of biosolids; 
  • Assists in operating, monitoring and maintaining equipment for the water reclamation facilities water for non-potable purposes; 
  • Assists in the biological and chemical analysis of wastewater; 
  • Reads and records meters and gauges and interprets information according to operating characteristics; 
  • Prepares operational records and reports; 
  • Adheres to safety and cleanliness standards; 
  • May perform general maintenance and grounds duties related to the upkeep of the facility and lift stations; 
  • Performs related duties as required and/or assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • repair and maintenance on pumps, tanks and other equipment used in wastewater and water reclamation treatment; 
    • sampling procedures used in laboratory analyses of wastewater and reclaimed water; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to 
    • retain and apply, through on-the-job training, knowledge of the basic operations of a water pollution control facility;
    • perform required chemical tests; 
    • keep operational records; 
    • utilize computer software; 
  • Mechanical ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or certification of having passed the General Educational Development (GED) certification examination and any experience and training which will provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must obtain the State of Connecticut, Wastewater Treatment Facility Class I Operator Certificate as approved by the Commissioner of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) per the review and issuance of a Wastewater Treatment Facility Class I Operator Certificate no later than 24 months from the date of appointment to the Water Pollution Control Operator Trainee class.
  • Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain specific education and/or experience to meet various certification requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to extreme weather conditions in all seasons, highly disagreeable effects of waste, loud and potentially dangerous machinery and working with chemicals; may be required to lift moderately heavy weights and work in uncomfortable positions.
