PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Labor Department this class is accountable for conducting investigations into employers compliance with minimum wage and hour law.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Field Supervisor of Wage Regulation or other employee of higher grade in the performance of routine tasks; receives closer supervision when performing more advanced tasks.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead paraprofessional/clerical employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Audits payroll and time records of employers for compliance with state and federal wage and hour laws and regulations;
  • Investigates complaints and interviews employees, employers and other persons or agencies concerning complaints;
  • Collects statistical data in surveys of wage rates and hours worked in various occupations and industries;
  • Initiates and conducts fact finding conferences;
  • Transcribes claims for wages when such are found due under existing laws;
  • Prepares reports and assembles evidence for hearings or court cases;
  • Conducts cost of living surveys as required;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in labor management relations involving rates of pay, hours of work, conditions of employment and regulations of wages OR with payroll, timekeeping or accounting practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in business or public administration, finance or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience.
  • Successful completion of a Connecticut Careers Trainee program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
