PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut and Connecticut State Colleges and Universities this class is accountable for independently providing a full range of skilled laboratory shop assistance to professional staff members engaged in complex technological and scientific research projects by leading a group of workers and students and/or by functioning as the sole technician in a department.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Lead University Research Technician or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead University Research Technicians of lower grade, Qualified Craft Workers, or student helpers on a continuing basis or as the sole technician in a department is responsible for supervision of personnel using technical equipment as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Works as a skilled laboratory shop assistant to professional staff members engaged in technological or scientific research projects;
  • Leads and/or performs the calibration, maintenance and repair of laboratory shop equipment such as pumps, compressors, x-ray equipment, spectrophotometers, generators, heat exchangers, grinders, filters, reactors, agitators, centrifuges, ovens, condensers, vibrating screens, microscopes, microphotographic cameras and other laboratory shop instruments and equipment;
  • Designs, fabricates and modifies research and classroom equipment to meet design requirements;
  • Leads and/or assists in the operation and maintenance of machine tools, welding equipment, electrical apparatus and other equipment;
  • Maintains inventory control of lab supplies and equipment;
  • Schedules and coordinates work on various projects;
  • Maintains project records;
  • May perform laboratory operations;
  • May perform and direct trouble-shooting of equipment;
  • May instruct students, faculty or staff in the use of tools and equipment;
  • May be responsible for the procurement of supplies and equipment;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of and ability to perform the calibration, operation, maintenance and repair of chemical, electrical or mechanical equipment;
  • Knowledge of standard shop practices, scientific equipment and terminology;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Considerable ability to fabricate experimental apparatus and to modify existing equipment to specific needs;
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of technical experience in a laboratory or machine shop involving the design, modification or repair of machinery, chemical, electrical or mechanical equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in the physical sciences, mechanical or electrical engineering or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment or materials.
