PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Labor or the Department of Veterans Affairs this class is accountable for interviewing applicants for veterans aid and investigating the financial status of applicants.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of an administrative official or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead/supervise lower level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Conducts investigations of veterans' income, real and personal property, insurance and other assets to determine eligibility of veterans, spouses, or family for financial assistance;
  • Reviews funeral expenses and recommends payment within regulations;
  • Speaks to groups and individuals on the laws and regulations pertaining to veterans aid;
  • Writes case histories and reports;
  • May issue approved assistance checks on a regular or an emergency basis;
  • May review aid cases and recommend adjustments if necessary;
  • May conduct special investigations;
  • May testify in court;
  • May lead volunteers;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in investigative work or in work involving real property transactions, claims adjusting or social services eligibility determination.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have served honorably in the Armed Forces of the United States of America and must be a veteran as defined in the Connecticut General Statutes, Section 27-103.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel within the State in the course of their daily work.
