In the University of Connecticut Health Center this class is accountable for supervising a functional division of the Respiratory Therapy Department.
Receives general direction from employee of higher grade.
Supervises Respiratory Therapists, Respiratory Therapy Technicians and other respiratory care staff as assigned.
Supervises staff and ensures that all procedures performed are in compliance with professional and departmental standards; maintains supply of emergency oxygen in all patient areas; participates in resuscitative efforts and maintains resuscitation equipment; sets up, operates and monitors all long term ventilatory support; prepares and presents in-service and clinical instruction to respiratory therapy and other hospital staff; maintains and prepares statistical reports; may administer various types of respiratory therapy and perform diagnostic testing; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of equipment, procedures, techniques and terminology used in respiratory therapy and related diagnostic testing; considerable technical knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology and pathology; knowledge of hospital organization; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to develop and present training programs; supervisory ability.
Two (2) years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist.
Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain a license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner issued by the Connecticut Department of Public Health in accordance with the applicable Connecticut General Statutes.
Candidates will be required to take a physical examination to demonstrate sufficient physical strength for efficient performance of duties.
