PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Departments of Developmental Services and Mental Health and Addiction Services, or Southern Connecticut State University this class is accountable for supervising a speech/language pathology and audiology program and staff.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

In a health care facility or community-based health care program, directs a communications therapy program as the supervisor of a small number of other professionals; may also act as a consultant to departmental or community speech language pathologists and audiologists.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Speech Pathologists and Audiologists and other staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans program work; 
  • Establishes and maintains procedures; 
  • Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards; 
  • Prepares reports of activities and maintains records; 
  • Develops, supervises and participates in speech pathology and audiology centers and programs in an assigned area of state providing consulting services to health agencies, nursing homes, hospitals, inter- and intra-state agencies and professional personnel in area of speech pathology and audiology; 
  • Assists in the development of instructional materials and procedural manuals; 
  • Counsels parents, teachers and others on nature and management of communication disorders and dysphagia; 
  • Prepares and presents training for professional development; 
  • Reviews medical, social and psychological histories; 
  • Participates in national and regional professional conventions; 
  • Participates in pre-and post-clinical conferences on comprehensive patient care; 
  • Assists in planning statewide service delivery; 
  • Participates in research studies; 
  • May provide direct services to patients; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • anatomic, physiologic, linguistic and psycholinguistic variables and their relations to development and management of speech, language, hearing and dysphagia; 
    • pathologies and assessment techniques of speech, language hearing and dysphagia disorders and their effect on communication and habilitation/rehabilitation procedures; 
  • Knowledge of public health outreach principles; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
    • skill in individual and group instruction; 
  • Ability to
    • interpret psychological and medical data as related to speech pathology and audiology; 
    • consult; 
    • prepare reports, records and instructional materials;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Master's degree in either speech pathology or audiology from a program approved by the Commissioner of Public Health and two (2) years of professional experience in either speech pathology or audiology.

NOTE: For state employees professional experience is interpreted at the level of a Speech Pathologist or Audiologist.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain licensure as either a Speech and Language Pathologist or Audiologist issued by the Commissioner of Public Health.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to have knowledge of a foreign language or proficiency in the use of a manual language system in certain designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to disagreeable conditions in the course of their work.
