PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station (CAES) this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks which include facilitating in-house scientific publications, supervising and maintaining Station library operations, assisting in responding to public inquiries and the dissemination of information to the public.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Chief of Services.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead/supervise library and clerical staff or other lower level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Edits and prepares specifications for the printing of CAES scientific articles and manuscripts; 
  • Supervises the CAES library operations; 
  • Oversees mailings and maintenance of distribution lists; 
  • Oversees/coordinates artists and photographers; 
  • Takes photographs; 
  • Edits and crops illustrations; 
  • Writes and/or edits press releases; 
  • Coordinates/arranges for public use of and visits to the CAES facilities; 
  • Prepares displays; 
  • Oversees the archiving of records and scientific publications; 
  • Represents CAES at public events; 
  • Coordinates computer purchasing and repair; 
  • Assists with e-mail and internet service for the staff; 
  • Acts as the CAES webmaster; 
  • Coordinates public outreach programs; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • science writing and/or scientific publications; 
    • mass media operations; 
    • library operations; 
    • computers and their application for word processing, publications and data management; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years of experience involving library operations and/or editing/publishing scientific publications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in library science or a scientific discipline may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
