PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Division of State Police this class is accountable for supervising the work of assigned police and civilian personnel in a troop or specialized unit/section.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a State Police Lieutenant or other officer of higher rank.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises assigned police and civilian personnel.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Supervises, schedules, assigns and reviews work of assigned personnel;
  • Interprets laws, rules and regulations to subordinates and the general public;
  • Reviews reports prepared by subordinates;
  • Follows up on special assignments to ensure completion;
  • Supervises continual training and development of personnel;
  • Keeps records and submits periodic relevant reports to commanding officer;
  • Maintains liaison with other agencies, news media or the public;
  • May investigate complaints of employee misconduct and initiate disciplinary action;
  • May supervise clerical and recordkeeping functions on assigned shift;
  • May review laws, rules and regulations and recommend necessary revisions;
  • Performs related duties as required.
AT A TROOP:
  • Acts as shift supervisor for troopers responsible for criminal investigation and patrol;
  • Supervises collection and preservation of evidence for court presentation; 
  • Responds to fatalities or other critical incidents;
  • Assists in coordinating troop activities;
  • Interacts with various social and regulatory agencies;
  • Assists in reviewing operational plans for major crimes or natural disasters and recommends necessary revisions;
  • May perform police patrol duties;
  • May represent troop at meetings with other law enforcement agencies or organizations;
  • May be responsible for proper operation of radio or telephone monitoring systems;
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • relevant agency policies and procedures;
    • relevant state and federal laws, statutes, regulations and court decisions;
    • police practices and investigative procedures;
    • area resources;
  • Knowledge of principles of modern police administration;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Four (4) years of experience as a Connecticut State Police Trooper above the level of State Police Trooper Trainee.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess sufficient strength, stamina, agility and endurance to perform all the duties of the class.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of assault or injury from assaultive/abusive criminals; may be exposed to risk of injury from automobile or other accidents; may also be exposed to discomforts including working in tiring positions, disagreeable environmental conditions, etc.
