PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection this class is accountable for receiving on-the-job training in the classification and filing of fingerprints.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of a State Police Supervising Identification Technician or other employee of higher grade.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives training in fingerprint classification procedures to perform tasks as outlined in specification for the class of State Police Identification Technician; 
  • Takes fingerprints; 
  • Assists in classification of fingerprint impressions utilizing Henry System with extensions and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) fingerprint coding methods; 
  • Assists in filing of fingerprint records; 
  • Searches fingerprint files by hand; 
  • Searches, compares and verifies incoming fingerprint cards with master fingerprint cards; 
  • Transcribes fingerprint formulas on processed fingerprint cards; 
  • Updates master fingerprint records and files fingerprints according to classification; 
  • Performs clerical work related to identification process; 
  • May fingerprint deceased of questionable or unknown identity; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of methods and procedures used in fingerprint classification; 
  • Ability to
    • accurately compare fingerprint data; 
    • maintain criminal and non-criminal fingerprint filing systems; 
    • follow written and oral instructions; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in the processing or classification of fingerprints.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Completion of a course in fingerprint classification from a school recognized by the International Association for Identification may be substituted for the General Experience.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have and maintain sufficient visual acuity to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

APPOINTMENT

This class is established to permit the agency to recruit and train employees for the class of State Police Identification Technician 1. An employee may be appointed to this class for a period not to exceed one (1) year. At such time during that period that an incumbent achieves the minimum experience requirements, the incumbent may be appointed to the State Police Identification Technician 1 class. The incumbent may not remain as a State Police Identification Trainee for more than one (1) year from the date of original appointment. No exceptions or extensions beyond the one (1) year will be granted.
