PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Departments of Developmental Services and Veterans Affairs this class is accountable for providing professional social work services required by individuals to promote and sustain social functioning.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Does not exercise direct or full supervisory authority; however, incumbents may function as a lead Social Worker with entry level professional, paraprofessional or clerical staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Conducts in depth interviews with individuals, their families, medical and psychiatric professionals and other resource individuals in order to obtain complete individual histories;
  • Determines and assesses individual needs and develops treatment plans to address them; 
  • Contracts with outside agencies to assist in treatment of complex individual problems (financial, legal, medical, psychiatric, etc.);
  • Assesses individual functioning level to determine suitability of community residential and or employment placement; 
  • Makes placements when appropriate and provides case management services for individuals; 
  • Conducts individual, group and family counseling and therapy sessions; 
  • Provides crisis intervention services to individuals in emergency situations; 
  • Provides training and consultation to colleagues, staff, families and community organizations on issues of special relevance to the physically or intellectually disabled;
  • Serves as individual advocate or agency representative in legal proceedings;
  • May function as team leader, social representative and/or Qualified Intellectual Disability Professional on interdisciplinary team;
  • May assist in development of institutional policies and programs;
  • May recruit, evaluate and license private community training homes; 
  • May participate in development and implementation of individual education or program plans for individuals;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • social, psychological, economic and medical factors that influence behavior of individuals;
    • group dynamics;
    • casework and group work methods;
  • Knowledge of community resources available to individuals and families;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to plan service programs that meet established individual needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience providing casework or group work services to an assigned caseload of individuals or families.

NOTE: Qualifying experience at this level will include:
  • use of professional interviewing techniques;
  • practiced skill facilitating and guiding group sessions to meet therapeutic objectives;
  • assessment of client needs and functioning level achieved through continuing casework contacts and evaluation of social work interns.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in counseling, psychology, special education or vocational rehabilitation may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
  • A Master's degree in social work may be substituted for the entire General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language for designated positions within the classification.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
