In the Departments of Developmental Services, Emergency Services and Public Protection and Veterans Affairs this class is accountable for providing professional social work services and/or programs required by communities and/or individuals to promote and sustain social functioning.
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.
Does not exercise direct or full supervisory authority; however, incumbents may function as a lead Social Worker with entry level professional, paraprofessional or clerical staff.
Six (6) years of experience providing casework or group work services to an assigned caseload of individuals or families.
Chronic and Convalescent Nursing Homes and Rest Homes with Nursing Supervision:
A Bachelor’s degree in social work from a college or university which was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education at the time of graduation and one (1) year of social work experience in a health care facility.
NOTE: Qualifying experience at this level will include:
- use of professional interviewing techniques;
- practiced skill facilitating and guiding group sessions to meet therapeutic objectives;
- assessment of client needs and functioning level achieved through continuing casework contacts and evaluation of social work interns.
- College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Master's degree in behavioral health, counseling, psychology, special education or vocational rehabilitation may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
- A Master's degree in social work may be substituted for the entire General Experience.
NOTE: The above substitutions will not apply to positions within chronic and convalescent nursing homes and rest homes with nursing supervision in accordance with Conn. Regs. § 19-13-D8t (2024), which requires a Bachelor’s degree in social work from a college or university which was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education at the time of graduation and one (1) year of social work experience in a health care facility.
