PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Labor Department this class is accountable for conducting investigations on a full range of cases concerned with minimum wage and hour legislation.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Field Supervisor of Wage Regulation or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Leads Wage and Hour Investigators 1 and lower level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Investigates complicated or non-routine complaints; 
  • Conducts special investigations upon referral from other divisions of department and reinspection of previously negligent employers; 
  • Makes periodic field visits with lower level investigators; 
  • Trains new investigators and conducts a continuous training program for other investigators; 
  • Participates in staff meetings; 
  • May speak before interested groups; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • relevant state and federal wage and hour laws and regulations; 
    • payroll methods; 
  • Considerable skill in arithmetical computations; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
  • Investigative ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience in labor management relations involving rates of pay, hours of work, conditions of employment and regulation of wages OR with payroll, timekeeping or accounting practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in business or public administration, finance or a related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
  • For state employees one (1) year of experience as a Wage and Hour Investigator 1 may be substituted for the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
