PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station this class is responsible for performing extremely complex analyses and examinations, or for pioneering and innovative research.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of a Chief Agricultural Scientist.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead/supervise Agricultural Research Technicians, Agricultural Research Assistants, Seasonal Assistants and other lower level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Applies unusual distinction and insight to produce innovative research on basic and applied scientific problems; 
  • Achieves national recognition in chosen field(s); 
  • Analyzes, interprets and conveys results to other scientists and the general public; 
  • Publishes reports for peer-reviewed, nationally/internationally recognized professional journals; 
  • Addresses public/professional meetings as a recognized authority in a field(s); 
  • Provides technical information to the public as a resource; 
  • Responds to citizens' questions; 
  • Must seek grants and extramural funding; 
  • Performs work with the high ethics, competence and thoroughness of a proven professional; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable outstanding achievement in research demonstrated by substantial publication of very high order research papers with special skill, creativity and originality; 
  • Nationally recognized knowledge in research field(s); 
  • Skills

  • Ability to
    • provide critical expertise for other scientists in solving very important and difficult problems in scientific field(s); 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Ph.D. or equivalent and ten (10) years of professional experience in a scientific research organization.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to occasionally lift heavy objects, such as standard laboratory equipment and/or trays/boxes of glassware; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such hazards as broken glass, chemicals, and toxic or disease-carrying substances.
