PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing the most complex tasks in the review of plans and specifications and inspection of contractors' work related to electrical systems to ensure conformance to standards, codes and contract documents.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead lower level employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Inspects electrical work to ensure compliance with code requirements and standards and recommends changes; 
  • Examines shop drawings and materials for conformity to specifications; 
  • Performs special investigations and analyses specific to problems in electrical systems; 
  • Conducts project meeting and schedules and coordinates work of electrical contractors and subcontractors with general building schedule; 
  • Analyzes change orders to verify material quantities and labor hours and negotiates costs of changes; 
  • Performs tests to determine if system is functioning properly; 
  • Reviews accuracy of electrical contractors requisitions and withholds payments as necessary; 
  • Reviews plans and specifications and assists in their interpretation for contractors; 
  • Prepares records and reports; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    • methods, materials and installation of equipment used in electrical work of large public buildings;

  • Considerable ability to check and supervise electrical work and layout of electrical equipment;

    • read and interpret building plans and specifications as related to electrical field;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in large scale commercial or public construction in the electrical systems.

NOTE: Large scale construction is interpreted as multimillion dollar apartment complexes, public institutions, industrial complexes or other building projects of similar size and scope. The construction of residential developments, small commercial and/or industrial buildings does not meet this requirement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in engineering, architecture or building construction may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including a license as a Construction Inspector or higher within six (6) months of appointment.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from construction site environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from year round weather conditions.
