PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In state facilities this class is accountable for the diagnosis and treatment of intellectual disorders or participating in other psychological services involving diagnostic testing, behavior modification, program development and evaluation, community outreach, education and training, rehabilitation and/or research.
GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE
Incumbents in this class are accountable for mastering the skills necessary to satisfactorily complete the one year of postdoctoral experience required for licensure as a psychologist.
Works under the close supervision of the Director of Psychological Services or other licensed psychologist of higher grade.
May lead psychology staff of lower grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Applies principles of learning, behavioral analysis, motivation, perception, education, group dynamics, personality and psychometrics to problems involving the individuals with an intellectual disability, legal offenders and those included in other treatment and rehabilitation programs;
- Evaluates progress and makes recommendations including evaluation of empirical data and summarization of findings;
- Provides consultation for treatment programs;
- Provides community outreach and consultation services;
- Provides diagnostic and psychotherapeutic services;
- Participates in development, implementation and coordination of new service programs;
- Writes professional reports;
- May provide psychological research;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Considerable knowledge of psychological disciplines including social, personality, adolescent and child psychology, research design, psychometrics and statistics, behavioral analysis and adjustment, vocational rehabilitation, community outreach and consultation and group dynamics;
- Knowledge of psychological research techniques;

- Ability to
- select, administer and evaluate tests of individual ability including interest, attitude, aptitude, achievement and intelligence tests;
- provide consultation and training services;
- evaluate methodology and program effectiveness.
Applicants must have graduated from an educational program approved by the Board of Examiners of Psychologists with consent of the Commissioner of Public Health. Generally, this will be interpreted as possession of a doctorate degree in psychology from a college or university program which is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) or as otherwise determined by the Board and the Commissioner. Applicants possessing degrees from other than APA accredited programs must first gain acceptance from the Department of Public Health.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
A doctorate degree in psychology as indicated above and completion of a one (1) year internship, externship or practicum.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
The term of appointment to positions in this class shall be for a period of one (1) year, renewable to a maximum of three (3) years, at which time the incumbent must achieve licensure as a psychologist in Connecticut.
