PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In state facilities, this class is accountable for the supervision of a physical therapy program for physically, mentally and/or developmentally disabled clients.
GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE
In a facility which has no Director of Rehabilitation Therapies, this class has programmatic and administrative responsibility for a therapy program. Supervision of other employees is not necessary provided there is supervision of a program in the absence of a Director. Where used in a supervisory capacity, this class must supervise at least two (2) filled professional therapist positions.
Receives general direction from the Director of Rehabilitation Therapies, Assistant Superintendent, physician or other employee of higher grade.
May supervise Physical Therapists and students and staff in other therapy disciplines.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Plans, directs and/or contributes to the planning and directing of a physical therapy program; develops diagnostic tools and administrative procedures for physical therapy department within a state facility or hospital; develops and maintains departmental standards; supervises and instructs staff and intern therapists in new physical therapy techniques and implementation of new procedures; provides inservice training; supervises therapy staff and reviews their reports; assigns clients to physical therapy staff; conducts and/or participates in clinics, child study meetings and case conferences to provide consultation to attending physician and other therapeutics disciplines regarding client level of functioning, treatment plans and progress; arranges client appointments for clinic visits, further testing by other disciplines and physical therapy treatments such as whirlpools, etc.; administers physical therapy treatments to clients; prepares and maintains reports on client diagnosis, treatment and progress; meets with other department heads to discuss clinical and administrative issues; maintains and orders supplies and equipment; may act for Chief of Rehabilitation Therapies in his/her absence; may maintain liaison with local and state agencies for continuance of physical therapy services upon client discharge; may make home visits and/or transport and escort clients off grounds; may participate in ad hoc committee meetings; may represent physical therapy department by speaking to community groups; may make adaptive equipment; may serve as a Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional (QIDP); may supervise related therapy areas; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of physical therapy; considerable knowledge of physiology, applied anatomy and kinesiology; considerable knowledge of physical, mental and/or psychosocial disorders; knowledge of community service; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; skill in administering physical therapy in its various forms; skill in instructing and supervising others in practice of physical therapy; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Three (3) years of experience as a Physical Therapist.
1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain licensure as a Physical Therapist in the State of Connecticut.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
