PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At UConn Health, Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Department this class is accountable for receiving on the job training in a structured development program in decontaminating, processing, assembling, sterilizing, storing, distributing medical supplies, devices, and equipment.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This class is intended for central sterile school or program graduates who are in the process of obtaining a Certified Registration Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) credential.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of a Central Sterile Processing Instrument Specialist; works more independently with acquired experience.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Receives training to perform tasks as outlined in the specification for the class of Central Sterile Processing Instrument Specialist;
  • Assists with setting up case carts to correspond with operating room schedules;
  • Assists with maintaining schedules and carts for emergency cases, as necessary;
  • Acts as liaison to operating room supervisor and surgeons, primarily to set up, maintain and update card index of individual surgeon instrument preferences so that operating room case carts can be set up accordingly; 
  • Assists with inspecting instruments and keeps inventory including maintenance of set reserve levels, rotation of trays in storage, checking expiration dates;
  • Assists with distribution, processing and decontamination of supplies and equipment as required;
  • Assists with the maintenance of selected items;
  • Assists with cleaning, processing, sterilizing and assembling some anesthesia equipment and related operating room equipment; 
  • Assists with the maintenance of a clean and orderly supply area;
  • Develops knowledge of operating room instruments, operative procedures, and all Sterile Processing Department equipment and supplies, including the proper methods for cleaning, preparing, sterilizing, and maintaining items for use;
  • May operate sterilization and/or decontamination equipment;
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an approved central sterile school or program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may occasionally be required to lift and carry trays of surgical instruments and linen, may have minimal exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases, and may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.

APPOINTMENT

  • An employee may be appointed to this class for a period normally not to exceed two (2) years.
  • Incumbents must obtain and maintain either a Certified Registration Central Service Technician (CRCST) credential administered by the International Association of Healthcare Central Services Material Management OR a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) credential administered by the Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution within the training program.  
  • On completion of two (2) years of successful and satisfactory performance as a Central Sterile Processing Instrument Trainee and obtaining the required credential, an incumbent will be promoted to the Central Sterile Processing Instrument Specialist classification. (on the first pay period following the completion of the two (2)-year training requirement). 
  • Incumbents in this class are required to submit to the employing agency a letter of verification obtained from the Office of the Registrar attesting to the student's current educational status.
  • Permanent status cannot be attained while working in this classification.

SALARY

 Incumbents shall receive a step adjustment:  
 First year of training: FK 13 Step 1 
 Following successful completion of the first year of training:  FK 13 Step 2
 Following successful completion of the second year of training: FK 13 Step 3
