PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a facility of the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for acting as a supervisor.

GUIDELINES FOR JOB CLASS USE

This class has 24 hour responsibility for the coordination of the residential program for quarters with thirty (30) to sixty (60) individuals.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a Developmental Services Residential Program Supervisor or other employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Developmental Services Workers and other employees as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Coordinates and supervises a residential living program;
  • Supervises residential living staff by assigning and evaluating their work;
  • Reviews staff reports, notes, logs, etc. for accuracy and conformance with policy;
  • Provides inservice training pertaining to care, supervision and training of individuals within unit;
  • Confers daily with staff on operational, disciplinary and special problems;
  • Assists in development and implementation of policies, programs and operational procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations and needs of individuals;
  • Evaluates performance of individual care program within unit and their personal health, safety and training;
  • Investigates individual abuse, incident and accident cases;
  • Ensures that supportive care services such as housekeeping, maintenance, dietary and laundry are carried out;
  • Orders supplies and equipment for program functioning and individual personal needs;
  • Prepares operational and evaluative reports;
  • Assists in unit response to surveys and inspections;
  • May design and write residential living programs;
  • May attend interdisciplinary team and administrative meetings;
  • May administer first aid in emergency situations; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • modern methods of working with individuals with an intellectual disability;
    • goals, policies and organization of a residential living unit;
    • rehabilitative and interdisciplinary process;
  • Knowledge of
    • support services provided in residential care such as housekeeping, dietary, maintenance and laundry;
    • state and federal regulations that govern operation of a residential unit of a state facility;
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • handle problems encountered in working with individuals with an intellectual disability;
    • implement policies and operational procedures;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience working with individuals with an intellectual disability at the level of a Developmental Services Worker 2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

Two (2) years of college education, preferably in a social science, educational or nursing field, may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to be bilingual or fluent in American Sign Language.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess physical and emotional health for efficient performance of duties; a physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable and/or infectious diseases and to risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
